Epicutaneously sensitized food‐induced anaphylaxis is ameliorated with “oral tolerance” to antigen
Abstract Food allergy is an antigen‐specific immunological adverse reaction after exposure to a given food. Multiple clinical studies showed that oral immunotherapy (OIT) is effective for the prevention and treatment for food allergy that is developed in infants and children. However, the effectiveness of OIT for epicutaneously sensitized food allergy remains unclear. Previously, we established a mouse model of epicutaneous‐sensitized food allergy. In this model, systemic allergic reaction including...

Differences in PD-1 expression on CD8+ T-cells in chronic myeloid leukemia patients according to disease phase and TKI medication
Abstract Malignant cells can increase in number using immune escape mechanisms such as immune checkpoints. In this study, we evaluated the expression of an immune checkpoint programmed death 1 (PD-1) on T-cell subsets in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). We obtained bone marrow aspirate samples from CML patients and from individuals without evidence of hematologic malignancies (controls). PD-1 expression on T-cell subsets was measured using flow cytometric analysis. PD-1 expression...

Reflectance confocal microscopy evaluation of pigmented lesions on tattooed skin
Abstract The evaluation of pigmented lesions on tattooed skin poses a diagnostic challenge for dermatologists, as a nevus may be partially or completely obscured by tattoo pigment. Because of incidences of melanoma arising from tattooed skin, the current gold standard is to biopsy these lesions. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a noninvasive imaging modality used in the diagnosis and management of skin diseases that may allow for diagnosis, while preserving the tattoo...

Blunted cardiovascular reactivity to acute psychological stress predicts low behavioral but not self‐reported perseverance: A replication study
Abstract Emerging evidence suggests that individuals with poor behavioral perseverance show low or blunted physiological responses to acute psychological stress. For example, a recent preliminary laboratory study demonstrated that blunted responders give up sooner and take fewer attempts when endeavoring to complete an impossible puzzle, but do not self‐report poor perseverance. This present research is a replication of the previous study with an increased sample size, longer recovery periods between...

Systemic Effects Induced by Hyperoxia in a Preclinical Model of Intra-abdominal Sepsis
Supplemental oxygen is a supportive treatment in patients with sepsis to balance tissue oxygen delivery and demand in the tissues. However, hyperoxia may induce some pathological effects. We sought to assess organ damage associated with hyperoxia and its correlation with the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a preclinical model of intra-abdominal sepsis. For this purpose, sepsis was induced in male, Sprague-Dawley rats by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). We randomly assigned experimental...

Luteolin Attenuates IL-1β-Induced THP-1 Adhesion to ARPE-19 Cells via Suppression of NF-κB and MAPK Pathways
Cytokine-induced endothelial dysfunction leads to inflammation and vascular adhesion molecule production in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells. Inflammation is a critical mediator in retinal degeneration (RD) diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and RD progression may be prevented through anti-inflammatory activity in RPE cells. The flavonoid polyphenol luteolin (LU) has anti-inflammatory and antidiabetes activities, but its effects regarding retinal protection remain unknown....

Cortical dynamics of movement‐evoked pain in chronic low back pain
Key points Cortical activity underlying movement‐evoked pain is not well understood, despite being a key symptom of chronic musculoskeletal pain. We combined HD‐EEG with a full‐body reaching paradigm in a virtual reality environment to assess cortical activity during movement‐evoked pain in cLBP. Movement‐evoked pain in individuals with cLBP was associated with longer reaction times, delayed peak velocity and greater movement variability. Movement‐evoked pain was associated with attenuated...

Altered dynamics of lipid metabolism in muscle cells from patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy is ameliorated by 6‐month training
Key points Regular exercise improves muscle functional capacity and clinical state of patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM). In our study, we used an in vitro model of human primary muscle cell cultures, derived from IIM patients before and after 6‐month intensive supervised training intervention, to assess the impact of disease and exercise on lipid metabolism dynamics. We provide evidence that muscle cells from IIM patients display altered dynamics of lipid metabolism and impaired...

Intravenous γ Globulin for Intractable Abdominal Pain due to IgA Vasculitis
IgA vasculitis (formerly known as Henoch–Schönlein purpura or anaphylactoid purpura) is a usually benign vasculitis that affects children of school age. The disease is characterized by the tetrad of palpable purpura, arthralgia/arthritis, abdominal pain, and hematuria. Treatment of IgA vasculitis is mainly supportive, with administration of simple analgesics. Corticosteroids have been shown to reduce and/or ameliorate the occurrence of abdominal pain which may be severe. We present two children with...
