Abstract

Keloid scars represent a pathological dermal response to injury characterised by aberrant fibroblast proliferation and resultant overproduction of collagen¹. Distinct from hypertrophic scars, keloids infiltrate surrounding normal tissue and rarely regress.² Keloid lesions extend beyond the margins of the original injury and may cause significant functional, cosmetic and psychological impact.³ Keloid scars occur more frequently in pigmented skin types, during puberty and pregnancy⁴ but may regress following menopause² suggesting an interplay of genetic and hormonal factors.
