CAG repeat size influences the progression rate of spinocerebellar ataxia type 3
Objective In spinocerebellar ataxia type 3/Machado‐Joseph disease (SCA3/MJD), the expanded CAG repeat in ATXN3 is the causal mutation, and its length is the main factor in determining the age at onset (AO) of clinical symptoms. However, the contribution of the expanded CAG repeat length to the rate of disease progression after onset has remained a matter of debate, even though an understanding of this factor is crucial for experimental data on disease modifiers and their translation to clinical...

Serum YKL-40 Levels Are Associated with the Atherogenic Index of Plasma in Children
YKL-40, also known as chitinase-3-like protein 1, is an inflammatory glycoprotein that is secreted by various cell types under acute, chronic, and subclinical inflammation conditions. Elevated serum YKL-40 levels are reportedly independently related to diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction, and cardiovascular mortality in adults. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between serum YKL-40 levels, lipid abnormalities, and the atherogenic index of plasma...

Inflammatory pain in peripheral tissue depends on the activation of the TNF‐α type 1 receptor in the primary afferent neuron
Abstract The mechanism underlying the role of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF‐α) in the development of inflammatory hyperalgesia has been extensively studied, mainly the role of TNF‐α in the release of pro‐inflammatory cytokines. The current concept relies in the fact that TNF‐α stimulates the cascade release of other pro‐inflammatory cytokines, such as IL‐1β, IL‐6 and IL‐8 (CINC‐1 in rats), triggering the release of the final inflammatory mediator prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and sympathetic amines...

Abstract A ubiquitous problem in science – from a physicist estimating the position of an electron (Heisenberg, 1927) to a social scientist conducting opinion polling (Bishop, 2004) – is that the measurement process can change the measured quantity itself. In addition, variation in measurement methodology may inadvertently favor one component of the measured quantity over another, leading to different results even though the measured quantity has not changed – for example, both gross domestic product...

Management of facial injuries in elite and professional sports – a consensus report
Whilst there have been great improvements in the management of injuries in elite and professional athletes with the formalisation of the clinical specialty of sports and exercise medicine, the management of facial injuries has perhaps lagged in this group. Professional athletic careers can be put in jeopardy by unnecessarily long absences from training and competition after facial injuries. Professional and elite sports athletes can benefit from different approaches to the management of their facial...

Vertebral pneumaticity is correlated with serial variation in vertebral shape in storks
Birds are unique among living vertebrates in having air‐filled sinuses in their postcranial skeletons, a phenomenon called postcranial skeletal pneumaticity (PSP). The factors that account for serial and interspecific variation in PSP are poorly understood. Using micro‐CT scans of stork vertebrae and geometric morphometric methods, I show that vertebral shape is strongly correlated with PSP, supporting the hypothesis that locus‐ and shape‐specific biomechanics influence skeletal pneumatization....

The Role of Multimodality Imaging in Monitoring Disease Activity and Therapeutic Response to Tocilizumab in Giant Cell Arteritis
Introduction. Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a large vessel (LV) vasculitis, mainly affecting elder patients. Monitoring GCA activity during tocilizumab (TCZ) treatment is an unmet need, since low serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) during treatment may underestimate disease activity. To date, few data are available on the role of different imaging techniques in monitoring GCA activity and response to treatment. We report herein a cohort of GCA patients treated with TCZ and followed up with multimodal...

Five novel mutations in SASH1 contribute to lentiginous phenotypes in Japanese families
Abstract SASH1 has been reported as a causal gene of lentiginous phenotypes with and without heredity, including an autosomal dominant type characterized by lentigines predominantly on sun‐exposed areas such as the face and limbs. Recently, cases of dyschromatosis with SASH1 mutations have been reported worldwide; however, only one case has been reported from Japan. Here, we analyzed six Japanese patients who characteristically showed many lentigines on sun‐exposed areas, using next‐generation sequencing....

Dissolving microneedles containing aminolevulinic acid improves protoporphyrin IX distribution
One important limitation of topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the limited tissue penetration of precursors. Microneedles (MNs) are minimally invasive devices used to promote intradermal drug delivery. Dissolving MNs contain drug‐associated to polymer blends, dissolving after insertion into skin, allowing drug release. This study comprises development and characterization of a pyramidal model of dissolving MNs (500 μm) prepared with 5% w/w aminolevulinic acid and 20% w/w Gantrez AN‐139 in aqueous...

Development of a polarization imaging method to detect paraffin‐embedded pathology tissues before applying other techniques
The present paper describes the development of a technique, applied to paraffin‐embedded tissues, which uses three different wavelengths of monochromatic light (λ1=445nm, λ2=540nm, and λ3=660nm) for the measures of the Degree of Polarization (DoP), Degree of Linear Polarization (DoLP), Degree of Circular Polarization (DoCP) and birefringence, all obtained from measurements of Stokes parameters by using polarized light. The goal of this study was to detect changes in developing embryonic mouse eye...

Profiling antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli strains displaying differential antibiotic susceptibilities using Raman spectroscopy
Abstract The rapid identification of antibiotic resistant bacteria is an important area for public health. In the environment, bacteria are continuously exposed to sub‐inhibitory antibiotic concentrations which has major implications in the generation of multi‐drug resistant strains. To understand the impact of sub‐inhibitory antibiotic concentrations on bacteria, Raman spectroscopy was employed coupled with partial least squares‐discriminant analysis to profile Escherichia coli strains treated...

Detection of gene mutation responsible for Huntington’s disease by terahertz attenuated total reflection microfluidic spectroscopy
Abstract Terahertz absorption spectroscopy based on attenuated total reflection (ATR) from a microfluidic sample cell was designed and implemented to detect gene mutations leading to Huntington's disease. The self‐developed compact ATR‐microfluidic system was employed to detect two groups of base‐repeated DNA molecules combined with a terahertz time‐domain spectrometer in a marker‐free manner. The first group featured different repetition patterns of oligonucleotide fragments, and the second group...

Systematic review of anterior congenital cephaloceles: open vs endoscopic repair
Background Anterior cephaloceles are rare congenital malformations that have historically been corrected via open approaches. Although the advent of endoscopic endonasal surgery has provided a minimally invasive and theoretically less morbid approach to the anterior skull base, whether endoscopic approaches provide superior treatment outcomes to open techniques has yet to be elucidated. The objective of this study was to systematically review the available literature regarding presentation and outcomes...

Obstructive-Type Jaundice without Bile Duct Dilatation in Generalized Peritonitis Is a Specific Sign of Spontaneous Gall Bladder Perforation
Generalized peritonitis caused by spontaneous gall bladder perforation is rare and difficult to diagnose preoperatively. The increased absorption of the spilling conjugated bile from the gall bladder by the inflamed peritoneum causes jaundice and direct hyperbilirubinemia. A 56-year-old male patient with septic generalized peritonitis and obstructive-type hyperbilirubinemia came to our hospital. The blood examination showed that total, direct, and indirect bilirubin were 6.20, 5.38, and 0.82 mg/dl....

Erythrodermic psoriasis successfully and rapidly treated with brodalumab: report of two cases
Abstract Erythrodermic psoriasis (EP) is a rare form of the disease clinically characterized by a generalized erythema covering ≥90% of the body surface area (BSA). The management of EP is challenging: no standardized guidelines exist with literature suggesting cyclosporine or infliximab as first‐line therapy. However, a recent systematic review showed a positive response in EP patients treated with biologic agents. The most common biologic used for EP up until now has been ustekinumab, whereas...

Incidence of metastasis to level V lymph nodes in clinically positive necks among Sri Lankan patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains the most common cancer among males in Sri Lanka. Metastasis to neck is a crucial prognostic factor. A modified radical/ radical neck dissection including levels I –V, is performed in patients with OSCC who has a clinically positive neck (cN+). Currently, evidence suggest sparing level V in a cN + may be justified due to less chance of metastasis in early stages of the disease. The incidence of metastasis to level V in patients with cN + s have not been...
