Acute orofacial pain

Pathophysiology
High prevalences of putative periodontal pathogens including Fusobacterium nucleatum, Peptostreptococcus micros, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia and Bacteroides forsythus were found in periodontal abscesses (Herrera et al 2000a).
Significant differences in the levels of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and LTB4 were found between patients with and without periodontitis. The PGE2 and LTB4 levels correlated with clinical parameters and reduced markedly after phase-1 of periodontal treatment (Tsai et al1998). It is interesting that the levels of PGE2 correlated with the severity of the periodontal status, and the levels of LTB4 correlated with gingival inflammation.
