AbstractThe article by Blackburn (Am J Epidemiol. XXXX;XXX(XX):XXXX–XXXX)) describes the evolution from the Makarska Conference in 1968 to the planning of the JUMBO trial and the decision by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to do the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial. He attributes the failure of Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial to show a significant reduction in coronary heart disease or total mortality to the design of the trial, the multiple centers involved, and continued...
AbstractCow’s milk is consumed by most North American children yet the relationships between the volume and fat content of cow’s milk consumed and childhood fracture risk are unclear. The primary objectives of this study were to evaluate whether the volume or fat content of cow’s milk consumed between 1-3 years of age was associated with the risk of fracture between 3-10 years of age. This was a prospective cohort study of 2466 children recruited between 2008 and 2016 in Toronto, Canada. The primary...
AbstractWe examined the risk of any perinatal mental illness associated with pre-pregnancy diabetes and identified how diabetes duration, complexity, and intensity of care affect this risk. We performed a population-based study of 15 to 49-year-old women with (n=14,186) and without (n=843,818) pre-pregnancy diabetes who had a singleton livebirth (Ontario, Canada, 2005-2015) and no recent mental illness. Modified Poisson regression estimated perinatal mental illness risk between conception and 1 year...
AbstractAsthma and obesity are two of the most prevalent chronic health conditions in children. Although there has been compelling evidence of co-occurrence of asthma and obesity, it is uncertain whether asthma contributes to the development of obesity or obesity contributes to the onset of asthma or both. In this study, we used a joint transition modeling approach with cross-lagged structure to understand how asthma and obesity influence each other dynamically over time. Subjects for this study...
AbstractThere is broad agreement that religion is a social determinant of health. In the article by Chen and VanderWeele (Am J Epidemiol. 2018;187(11):2355–2364), the authors took an outcome-wide approach to demonstrate associations between religious practices early in the life-course (regular service attendance and prayer/mediation) and a wide range of health endpoints and behaviors later on. Is religion a panacea? The study adds to the evidence that religious practices are correlated with a broad...
AbstractThe Folic Acid and Zinc Supplementation Trial (FAZST) was a multi-center, double-blind, block-randomized, placebo-controlled trial to determine whether folic acid and zinc supplementation in men improves semen quality and increases live birth rate among couples seeking infertility treatment (2013-2017). Eligible men were ages 18 years or older with their female partners ages 18-45 seeking infertility treatment. Men were randomized (1:1) to 5 mg folic acid and 30 mg elemental zinc daily or...
AbstractThe concept of a multiple risk factor intervention trial (MRFIT) originated in mid-20th century efforts to determine whether modifying the “risk factors” established by cardiovascular disease (CVD) epidemiology would prevent heart attacks. The term “MRFIT” probably first appeared in the 1968 report to the National Heart Institute (NHI) from investigators of the National Diet-Heart Feasibility Study (1). Based on their pilot experience, they recommended a trial of diet alone. Aware, however,...
AbstractHepatitis C virus (HCV) is common among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH). Extrahepatic manifestations of HCV, including myocardial infarction (MI), are a topic of active research. MI is classified into types, predominantly atheroembolic Type 1 MI (T1MI) and supply-demand mismatch Type 2 MI (T2MI). We examined the association between HCV and MI in the Centers for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome Research Network of Integrated Clinical Systems, a multi-center clinical...

Abstract Background Psychological distress is a strong and independent predictor of major depression. Assuming multiple roles (such as being both a mother and an employee) under stressful conditions may lead to psychological distress. This study evaluated, for the first time, the longitudinal effect of the simultaneous exposure to psychosocial work stressors and high family responsibilities on women's psychological distress. Methods Women were assessed at baseline (N = 1307) and at 3‐ and...

The benefits of the regular exercise on quality of life of individuals living with a headache are well known. However, whether the benefits of the exercise training on headache parameters (i.e., intensity, frequency and pain duration) occur in an intensity-dependent fashion remains unknown. Objective To investigate the effects of different exercise intensities on headache parameters. Design A systematic review of clinical trials that analyzed the effect of physical exercise on headache,...

Tendon injuries or tendinopathy are common painful and disabling conditions resulting from overuse and aging. Tendinopathy remains a challenging clinical problem since response to different treatment modalities is usually unsatisfactory and recovery is slow. We performed an extensive literature review focusing on non-surgical treatment options for tendinopathies, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroid, eccentric exercise, extracorporeal shock wave therapy, therapeutic ultrasound,...

Objective A reachable workspace evaluation using the Kinect sensor was previously introduced as a novel upper extremity outcome measure in neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions. This study investigated its usefulness in hemiplegic stroke patients. Design Forty-one patients with hemiplegic stroke were included. Kinect-based reachable workspace analysis was performed on both paretic and nonparetic sides. Upper extremity impairment was measured using the Fugl-Meyer Assessment and the...

This paper presents evidence from five studies (total White N = 7,209) that White American’s racial identity centrality is related to self‐reported levels of far‐right extremism. Furthermore, evidence from two of the studies shows that social dominance orientation (SDO) is another robust predictor of far‐right extremism. Results also show that SDO can moderate the relationship between White identity and extremism such that the association is stronger for Whites with a higher level of SDO. Therefore,...

Abstract Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most prevalent and treatable form of anemia worldwide. The clinical management of patients with IDA requires a comprehensive understanding of the many etiologies that can lead to iron deficiency including pregnancy, blood loss, renal disease, heavy menstrual bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, bariatric surgery, or extremely rare genetic disorders. The treatment landscape for many causes of IDA is currently shifting towards more abundant use of intravenous...

Diabetes mellitus has reached epidemic proportions. Foot ulceration is a multifactorial complication of diabetes associated with marked morbidity and mortality. Innate immune Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) mediated inflammation has been implicated in the systemic pathogenesis of diabetes and may contribute to impairment of wound healing. This study investigates the effect of high glucose and hypoxic conditions on TLR4 activation and signalling in vitro and in vivo.
The aim of this study was to assess the post-operative volumetric evolution of common iliac arteries (CIA) ≥ 17 mm diameter with respect to the type of endovascular technique performed and to assess type 1b endoleak risk factors.

CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Although PCC-obs developed significantly from ages 3 to 5, children with UCLP as a group did not catch up to typically developing Danish children at age 5. Furthermore, the LHPC group at age 5 did not reach the 3-year level of the EHPC group, which means that delaying hard palate closure until age 3 is detrimental to obstruent development. Both CSCs and DSCs at age 3 were important predictors of PCC-obs at age 5 and should be considered when determining need for intervention....
