The prevalence of different Kennedy's classifications and their relationship with age, gender, and location of the edentulous arches in Palestine Shockry Mustafa, Naji Ziad Arandi International Journal of Preventive and Clinical Dental Research 2019 6(3):53-55 Aim and Objectives:In West Bank, Palestine, there are no studies that have investigated the prevalence of different Kennedy's classifications and their relationship with age, gender, and location of the edentulous arches. Materials and Methods: This study group consists of 716 patients (463 males and 253 females). The patients were clinically examined to determine the Kennedy classification in Department of Prosthodontics, College of Dentistry, Arab American University. Results: A total of 716 participants were enrolled in this study; males (62) exhibited higher tooth loss than females (37). Among the Kennedy's classification, Class III was found to be most common in the maxilla (41%) and Class I in the mandible (39%). The least common class was Class IV in both arches. Conclusions: Kennedy's Class III partial edentulous type was most commonly found in the maxilla and Class I in the mandible. |
Effect of adding aluminum oxide on the flexural strength of heat-cured poly (methyl methacrylate) denture base resin Nikita Nahata, Rathin Dilipkumar Das, Saumil Chetan Sampat, Parmeet Banga, Vinay Dole, Suresh Narayandas Murkey International Journal of Preventive and Clinical Dental Research 2019 6(3):56-58 Background: Apart from its numerous advantages, poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has certain limitations such as its low strength, brittle on impact, poor thermal conductivity, and resultant low flexural strength. This study is, therefore, planned to investigate the flexural strength of heat-cured PMMA denture base resin with the addition of different percentage of aluminum oxide powder. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 specimens of PMMA (DPI® Heat Cure) of standard dimension (64mm x 10mm x 2.5mm) as per the American Dental Association specification No. 12/International Standards Organization specification No. 1567 for the determination of flexural strength were prepared: 30 for each of the four study groups. Aluminum oxide powder was added in specific percentage (5%, 15%, and 25% by weight) to the polymer component of heat-cure denture base resin as per the different subgroups. Results: The results of this study showed that the highest mean flexural strength was for specimens in Subgroup A, i.e., PMMA reinforced with 5% aluminum oxide powder by weight, with a mean value of 124.39 Mpa. Conclusions: Among the experimental group, the highest mean flexural strength of 124.39 Mpa was found with Subgroup A (5%) followed by Subgroup B (15%) which was 116.83 Mpa. The least flexural strength of 95.81 Mpa was found with Subgroup C (25%). |
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy as compared to placebo transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy for the management of myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome patients: A clinical study Abhishek vilaschandra nimavat, Amit Mathur, Sanket Shah, Siddharth Desai, Harshal Champaneri, Seema Chavda International Journal of Preventive and Clinical Dental Research 2019 6(3):59-61 Aims:The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy in the management of pain in myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome patients and to determine the effectiveness of placebo TENS therapy in the management of pain in myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome patients. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients received active TENS therapy and placebo TENS therapy. The Visual Analog Scale was used to measure the changes in pain and tenderness in the muscles of mastication. Results:A significant improvement was observed in active TENS therapy as compared to placebo TENS therapy regarding muscle tenderness. Conclusion:This study justifies the use of TENS therapy as well as placebo in the management of temporomandibular dysfunction. TENS therapy appears to be useful in relieving muscle pain. |
Comparative analysis of fracture resistance of two different glass-fiber postsystems: An in vitro study Rajendra Bharatiya, Ushma Prajapati, Anshu Gupta, Nikunj A Patel, Md Muzammil Khan, Bhagyashree S Sutaria International Journal of Preventive and Clinical Dental Research 2019 6(3):62-65 Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of root fracture of endodontically treated teeth restored with two different types of glass-fiber posts luted with glass-ionomer cement (GIC). Materials and Methods: Forty maxillary central incisors were sectioned at 1 mm of the cementoenamel junction and endodontically treated. The teeth were divided into two groups (n = 20) where Group I included teeth restored with Reforpost (No. 1, Angelus, Brazil) and Group II with Selfpost (Size 1, Medicept, UK). The posts were luted with GIC, and core built up was done using composite resin. The fracture strength was evaluated using a universal testing machine. The data obtained were tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The comparison of the mean strength required (in Newtons) to fracture the teeth was higher in Group I that is Reforpost than Group II (Selfpost) implicating highly significant differences in their fracture resistance (P ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: The conclusion drawn was that Group I (Reforpost post) exhibited better resistance to fracture than that of Group II (Selfpost post). |
Endodontic management of blunderbuss canal with open apex and Ellis Class IV fracture using mineral trioxide aggregate and compo-post Tanmay Das, Shashank Gupta, Jenny Atom, Ronel Lairenlakpam, Supriya Gupta, Aakanksha Chaudhary International Journal of Preventive and Clinical Dental Research 2019 6(3):66-68 The permanent teeth with open apex, blunderbuss canal, and Ellis Class IV fracture are difficult to treat as a traditional root canal procedure. Apexification is induction of apical closure, the treatment of choice for necrotic teeth with immature or resorbed root. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been proposed as a potential material for formation of hard tissue apical barrier. Use of anatomical post results in better prognosis of the present case. This case report presents endodontic management of a fractured maxillary right central incisor with apexification and compo-post to support weak canal and to provide tooth structure. A 21-year-old male patient came to the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Jaipur Dental College and Hospital, Jaipur, with the chief complaint of broken upper front tooth due to accidental fall (6–7 years). Dental history of discontinued endodontic treatment 1-year back was observed. Treatment includes two phases – endodontic phase and re-construction phase followed by full-crown porcelain-fused metal prosthesis. This case report discussed an improved option of application of chairside customized made fiber posts are preferred as they stimulate the root canal anatomy, provides increased retention and adaptation and also esthetics. |
