Application of GATA 3 and TTF‐1 in differentiating parathyroid and thyroid nodules on cytology specimens
Abstract Background Differentiating parathyroid from thyroid lesions can be difficult on fine‐needle aspiration (FNA) due to overlapping cytomorphologic features. While the traditional parathyroid hormone (PTH) assays can help in the distinction, these tests may be cumbersome, particularly when the lesion is unexpected clinically and a needle wash is not collected at the time of FNA. Therefore, we chose to investigate the application of immunohistochemical staining (IHC) with GATA 3 and thyroid...

Coherent Signal Parameter Estimation by Exploiting Decomposition of Tensors
The problem of parameter estimation of coherent signals impinging on an array with vector sensors is considered from a new perspective by means of the decomposition of tensors. Signal parameters to be estimated include the direction of arrival (DOA) and the state of polarization. In this paper, mild deterministic conditions are used for canonical polyadic decomposition (CPD) of the tensor-based signal model; i.e., the factor matrices can be recovered, as long as the matrices satisfy the requirement...

Interleukin-6 from Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Promotes Tissue Repair by the Increase of Cell Proliferation and Hair Follicles in Ischemia/Reperfusion-Treated Skin Flaps
The most common postoperative complication after reconstructive surgery is flap necrosis. Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and their secretomes are reported to mediate skin repair. This study was designed to investigate whether conditioned media from ADSCs (ADSC-CM) protects ischemia/reperfusion- (I/R-) induced injury in skin flaps by promoting cell proliferation and increasing the number of hair follicles. The mouse flap model of ischemia was ligating the long thoracic vessels for 3 h, followed...

Role of CX3CL1/CX3CR1 Signaling Axis Activity in Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a civilization disease which is still challenging for contemporary medicine in terms of treatment and prophylaxis. It results from excessive activation of the osteoclastic cell line and immune cells like macrophages and lymphocytes. Cell-to-cell inflammatory information transfer occurs via factors including cytokines which form a complex network of cell humoral correlation, called cytokine network. Recently conducted studies revealed the participation of CX3CL1 chemokine in the pathogenesis...

The Influence of Photoperiod on the Action of Exogenous Leptin on Gene Expression of Proinflammatory Cytokines and Their Receptors in the Thoracic Perivascular Adipose Tissue (PVAT) in Ewes
Leptin resistance is either a condition induced by human obesity or a natural phenomenon associated with seasonality in ruminants. In the cardiovascular system, the leptin resistance state presence is a complex issue. Moreover, the perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) appears to be crucial as a source of proinflammatory cytokines and as a site of interaction for leptin contributing to endothelium dysfunction and atherosclerosis progression. So the aim of this study was to examine the influence of the...

Attention shifting and subliminal cueing under high attentional load: an EEG study using emotional faces
Emotional expressions and attentional processes interact such that emotion increases perceptual sensitivity in modality-specific brain areas leading to more efficient processing of the stimulus. In the current study, we asked the question of whether the emotional expressions can be processed subliminally when faces are attended but the emotional expression is irrelevant. We presented angry and neutral male and female faces supraliminally and subliminally to participants in an attention-shifting paradigm....

Calcium signaling in brain microvascular endothelial cells and its roles in the function of the blood–brain barrier
The blood–brain barrier (BBB) plays critical roles in maintaining the stability of the brain's internal milieu, providing nutrients for the brain, and preventing toxic materials from the blood from entering the brain. The cellular structure of the BBB is mainly composed of brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMVECs), which are surrounded by astrocytic endfeet that are connected by tight junction proteins, pericytes and astrocytes. Recently, several studies have shown that aberrant increase in...

Citalopram reduces glutamatergic synaptic transmission in the auditory cortex via activation of 5-HT1A receptors
Serotonin modulates cognitive processes and is related to various psychiatric disorders, including major depression. Administration of citalopram reduces the amplitude of auditory evoked potentials in depressed people and animal models, suggesting that 5-HT has an inhibitory role. Here, we characterize the modulation of excitatory post-synaptic currents by application of either 5-HT or agonists of 5-HT1A and 5-HT2 receptors, or by endogenous 5-HT evoked by citalopram on pyramidal neurons from layer...
