Isothiazolinones in cleaning products: Analysis with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry of samples from sensitized patients and market
Gabriel Marrero‐Alemán, Leopoldo Borrego, Ana González Antuña, Ana Macías Montes, Octavio Pérez Luzardo
Version of Record online: 22 November 2019
Highlights
- Some cleaning products with high concentrations of isothiazolinones may cause cutaneous symptoms in sensitized patients, especially in spray form.
- Of all the products analyzed, 76.5% contained at least one isothiazolinone. MI and BIT were the components most commonly detected.
- Suitable quality controls of the final product should be made and the labels should specify the correct way to use the products.

Modifications induced by chemical skin allergens on the metabolome of reconstructed human epidermis: A pilot high‐resolution magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance study
François‐Marie Moussallieh, Eric Moss, Karim Elbayed, Guillaume Lereaux, Fleur Tourneix, Jean‐Pierre Lepoittevin
Version of Record online: 21 November 2019
Highlights
- A total of 32 different metabolites were identified in reconstructed human epidermis (RHE) by high‐resolution magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, among which 20 could be quantified for all samples.
- Statistical univariate analysis showed that the measured metabolites were different in the RHE samples treated with sensitizers vs non‐sensitizers.
- A multivariate partial least‐squares‐discriminant analysis was performed on the two treated groups, discriminating sensitizing and non‐sensitizing chemicals.

Identification of pigments related to allergic tattoo reactions in 104 human skin biopsies
Jørgen Serup, Katrina Hutton Carlsen, Nils Dommershausen, Mitra Sepehri, Bernhard Hesse, Christian Seim, Andreas Luch, Ines Schreiver
Version of Record online: 18 November 2019
- First study on chemical analysis of human skin biopsies from chronic allergic reactions in red tattoos to identify culprit pigment(s) and metals.
- Pigment Red (P.R.) 22, P.R.170, and P.R.210 were the prevailing pigments behind chronic allergic reactions in red tattoos. The epitope causing the reaction might be a pigment‐degradation product.
- Metal contamination is very common in any tattoo ink stock product, and its role in red tattoo allergy appears dubious.

The methylisothiazolinone epidemic goes along with changing patients' characteristics – After cosmetics industrial applications are the focus
Axel Schnuch, Steffen Schubert, Holger Lessmann, Johannes Geier
Version of Record online: 17 November 2019
HighlightsAfter an epidemic of MI allergy mainly caused by its use in cosmetics, the continuous use of MI in industrial applications, for example, paints, and subsequent sensitization remain a matter of concern.
