The effect of sleep deficiency on esophageal acid exposure of healthy controls and patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease
This study demonstrated that sleep deficiency can increase esophageal acid exposure not only in GERD patients but also in healthy controls. Moreover, healthy controls may develop abnormal esophageal acid exposure after sleep deficiency. Thus, sleep deficiency appears to be an important underlying mechanism for abnormal esophageal acid exposure and as a result should be addressed in GERD patients. Abstract Background Studies have demonstrated a bi‐directional relationship between sleep deficiency...

Molecular, biochemical, and proteomic analyses of transplastomic tobacco plants expressing an endoglucanase support chloroplast-based molecular farming for industrial scale production of enzymes
Abstract The successful production of recombinant enzymes by tobacco transplastomic plants must maintain compatibility of the heterologous enzyme with chloroplast metabolism and its long-time enzyme stability. Based on previous reports, it has been taken for granted that following biolistic-transformation, homoplasticity could be obtained from the initially heteroplastic state following successive rounds of selection in the presence of the selection agent. However, several studies...

Identification and characterization of novel xylose isomerases from a Bos taurus fecal metagenome
Abstract Discovering sugar metabolism genes is of great interest for lignocellulosic biorefinery. Xylose isomerases (XIs) were commonly screened from metagenomes derived from bovine rumen, soil, and other sources. However, so far, XIs and other sugar-utilizing enzymes have not been discovered from fecal metagenomes. In this study, environmental DNA from the fecal samples collected from yellow cattle (Bos taurus) was sequenced and analyzed. In the whole 14.26 Gbp clean data, 92...

Targeted blocking of miR328 lysosomal degradation with alkalized exosomes sensitizes the chronic leukemia cells to imatinib
Abstract Imatinib resistance remains the biggest hurdle for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), with the underlying mechanisms not fully understood. In this study, we found that miR328 significantly and strikingly decreased among other miRNA candidates during the induction of imatinib resistance. Overexpression of miR328 sensitized resistant cells to imatinib via post-transcriptionally decreasing ABCG2 expression, while miR328 knockdown conferred imatinib resistance...

Role of epigenetics in alveolar bone resorption and regeneration around periodontal and peri‐implant tissues
Periodontitis and peri‐implantitis are multifactorial diseases characterized by alveolar bone destruction mediated by the host response to a microbial challenge. Alveolar bone resorption mediated by epigenetics could be one of the mechanisms responsible for this destruction of alveolar bone. The relationship between epigenetic modifications and bone metabolism has been thoroughly investigated in bone remodeling, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis, but evidence is low regarding the relationship between...

Cytomegalovirus Infection Exacerbates Experimental Colitis by Promoting IL-23 Production
Abstract Many studies have demonstrated an association between cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Moreover, CMV infection is more common in patients with severe or steroid-refractory IBD. However, it is not clarified whether CMV worsens IBD or if it is merely a surrogate marker for IBD. Here, we used the dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis model to investigate if CMV infection exacerbates colitis. The mice were injected intraperitoneally...
