Μέχρι σήμερα, η βασική οδηγία σε ασθενείς με οικογενή υπερχοληστερολαιμία ήταν να αποφεύγουν την κατανάλωση κορεσμένων λιπαρών ώστε να κρατούν τη χοληστερόλη τους σε χαμηλότερα επίπεδα, μειώνοντας συνακόλουθα τον κίνδυνο καρδιακών παθήσεων. Ωστόσο, τα ευρήματα μιας νέας μελέτης που δημοσιεύθηκε στο BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, μάλλον φέρνουν μια ανατροπή. Πριν από δεκαπέντε χρόνια, μελέτη σε ευρύ πληθυσμιακό δείγμα από τη Δανία, συμπέραινε πως τα βρέφη που γεννήθηκαν με υποβοηθούμενη αναπαραγωγή διέτρεχαν υψηλό κίνδυνο εγκεφαλικής παράλυσης.
