Reference-free brain template construction with population symmetric registration
Abstract Population registration has been proposed for normalizing a large group of images into a common space, which is important in many clinical and research studies, such as brain development, aging, and atlas construction. Different from pairwise registration problem that aligns the target image to the reference directly, determining the reference or the hidden common space with the least bias is important in population registration. In order to decrease this bias, a lot of...

Classification of pure conduct disorder from healthy controls based on indices of brain networks during resting state
Abstract Conduct disorder (CD) is an important mental health problem in childhood and adolescence. There is presently a trend of revealing neural mechanisms using measures of brain networks. This study goes further by presenting a classification scheme to distinguish subjects with CD from typically developing healthy subjects based on measures of small-world networks. In this study, small-world networks were constructed, and feature data were generated for both the CD and healthy...

Mortality of Patients with Cushing’s Disease
Exp Clin Endocrinol DiabetesDOI: 10.1055/a-1197-6380Cushing’s disease is a rare condition of cortisol excess attributed to a pituitary adenoma with an annual incidence of 1.2–2.4 cases per million population. It is associated with several co-morbidities leading to increased mortality predominantly due to cardiovascular disease. Despite the advances in its diagnosis and management, survival can be compromised even...

Automated Relative Fundamental Frequency Algorithms for Use With Neck-Surface Accelerometer Signals
Relative fundamental frequency (RFF) has been suggested as a potential acoustic measure of vocal effort. However, current clinical standards for RFF measures require time-consuming manual markings. Previous semi-automated algorithms have been developed to calculate RFF from microphone signals. The current study aimed to develop fully automated algorithms to calculate RFF from neck-surface accelerometer signals for ecological momentary assessment and ambulatory monitoring of voice.

New technique for removing bone covering miniplates and screws
Miniplate osteosynthesis has revolutionised the treatment of open reduction and internal fixation in craniomaxillofacial procedures. However, when complications arise necessitating the removal of previously placed miniplates, bony overgrowth may be present and must be eliminated before removal of the hardware is possible. Osteogenesis over the screws prevents proper engagement of the screwdriver with the screw drives. If bone remains embedded in the screw drive during attempted removal of the screw,...

Relations between anterior disc displacement and maxillomandibular morphology in skeletal anterior open bite with changes to the mandibular condyle
In this study we investigated the relation between anterior disc displacement (ADD) and maxillomandibular morphology in skeletal anterior open bite with changes to the mandibular condyle. Thirty female patients (60 joints) with both conditions were evaluated. Magnetic resonance imaging of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) was used to diagnose both ADD and changes to the mandibular condyle (erosion, osteophyte, and deformity). The relations among ADD, changes to the mandibular condyle, and maxillomandibular...

Rapid Response: Activity from a hospital based Urgent Dental Care Centre during the COVID-19 pandemic
On 23rd March, the UK Government announced a nationwide lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in the unequivocal and absolute cessation of all elective dental treatment. With much conflicting evidence on best practice to deliver safe treatment comprising of emergency dento-alveolar surgery, this paper describes the protocols which were undertaken to successfully set up a novel Urgent Dental Care Centre (UDCC) service within a short timeframe. We present patient data from referral...

Intracranial Pressure during External Ventricular Drainage Weaning Is an Outcome Predictor of Traumatic Brain Injury
External ventricular drainage (EVD) is widely used in patients with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, the EVD weaning trial protocol varies and insufficient studies focus on the intracranial pressure (ICP) during the weaning trial. We aimed to establish the relationship between ICP during an EVD weaning trial and the outcomes of TBI. We enrolled 37 patients with a TBI with an EVD from July 2018 to September 2019. Among them, 26 were allocated to the favorable outcome group and 11 to the unfavorable...

Identification of COVID-19 Infection-Related Human Genes Based on a Random Walk Model in a Virus–Human Protein Interaction Network
Coronaviruses are specific crown-shaped viruses that were first identified in the 1960s, and three typical examples of the most recent coronavirus disease outbreaks include severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and COVID-19. Particularly, COVID-19 is currently causing a worldwide pandemic, threatening the health of human beings globally. The identification of viral pathogenic mechanisms is important for further developing effective drugs and targeted clinical...

Potential Anticancer Activity of Crude Ethanol, Ethyl Acetate, and Water Extracts of Ephedra foeminea on Human Osteosarcoma U2OS Cell Viability and Migration
Medicinal plants are potential sources for a wide range of complex compounds with probable anticancer activity. Ephedra foeminea Forssk. (E. foeminea), a medicinal plant found in the Eastern Mediterranean, has recently been gaining popularity as a cancer remedy; there is, however, a paucity of empirical evidence supporting this claim. In this study, the effect of E. foeminea ethyl acetate, ethanol, and water crude extracts on viability, migratory ability, and the steady-state mRNA levels of genes...

A Novel Prediction Model for Significant Liver Fibrosis in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis B
Background. Preventing liver fibrosis from progressing to cirrhosis and even liver cancer is a key step in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). This study is aimed at constructing and validating a new nomogram for predicting significant liver fibrosis () in CHB patients. Methods. The nomogram was based on a retrospective study of 252 CHB patients. The predictive accuracy and discriminative ability of the nomogram were evaluated by the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC),...

OSCC Exosomes Regulate miR-210-3p Targeting EFNA3 to Promote Oral Cancer Angiogenesis through the PI3K/AKT Pathway
This study is aimed at determining how oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) regulates the angiogenesis of HUVECs through miR-210-3p expression and exploring the relationship among miR-210-3p, its target protein, and the possible mechanism of angiogenesis regulation. miR-210-3p expression was detected in OSCC tissues and juxta cancerous tissues (JCT), and the relationship among miR-210-3p, microvessel density (MVD), and histopathologic features was analyzed. A conditioned medium (CM) of the OSCC cell...
