Rectal cancer sub-clones respond differentially to neoadjuvant therapy
Publication date: October 2019Source: Neoplasia, Volume 21, Issue 10Author(s): Lynn M Frydrych, Peter Ulintz, Armand Bankhead, Christopher Sifuentes, Joel Greenson, Lillias Maguire, Regina Irwin, Eric R. Fearon, Karin M HardimanAbstractTreatment of locally advanced rectal cancer includes chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery but patient responses to neoadjuvant treatment are variable. We have shown that rectal tumors are comprised of multiple genetically distinct sub-clones. Unique sub-clones within...

Microenvironmental Factors Drive Tenascin C and Src Cooperation to Promote Invadopodia Formation in Ewing Sarcoma
Publication date: October 2019Source: Neoplasia, Volume 21, Issue 10Author(s): Allegra G. Hawkins, Claire M. Julian, Sonja Konzen, Sydney Treichel, Elizabeth R. Lawlor, Kelly M. BaileyAbstractEwing sarcoma is a bone tumor most commonly diagnosed in adolescents and young adults. Survival for patients with recurrent or metastatic Ewing sarcoma is dismal and there is a dire need to better understand the mechanisms of cell metastasis specific to this disease. Our recent work demonstrated that microenvironmental...

Beware of the dog – Capnocytophga Canimorsus septic shock: a case report
Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a Gram-negative rods frequently isolated as commensal in the saliva of pets that can be transmitted to humans. We report a case of septic shock caused by this pathogen. A 78-year-old man affected by diabetes and hypertension was admitted for fever in our Emergency Department. He reported fever (37.7°C) with normal values of blood pressure, heart rate and saturation of oxygen. Laboratory studies showed increased values of procalcitonin and normal white-cell level. Blood...

Investigation of the roles of dysbindin-1 and SATB2 in the progression of Parkinson’s disease
OBJECTIVE: Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that typically results in the loss of dopaminergic neurons, especially in an area of the brain known as the substantia nigra. Here, we investigated the roles of two important neuronal development proteins, dysbindin-1 and SATB2, at different stages of Parkinson’s disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using various concentrations of a neurotoxin, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), we established the mouse models at initial...

LncRNA HOTAIR inhibited osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs by regulating Wnt/β-catenin pathway
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate whether HOX transcript antisense RNA (HOTAIR) can participate in the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) by regulating the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, thereby participating in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We detected the expression level of HOTAIR in 60 osteoporosis patients and 60 normal controls by Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR). Meanwhile, BMSCs derived from human or...

Effect of GGCX on the differentiation function of osteoporosis bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells through regulating TGFβ/smad signaling pathway
OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis (OP) has a high incidence and can be found in multiple age groups. The bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) have the potential for self-renewal and multi-directional differentiation, which are often used for investigating the differentiation function of osteoporosis bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. γ-glutamyl carboxylase (GGCX) is a carboxylase-related carboxylase and was observed to be abnormally expressed in osteoarthritis. However, the role and related mechanisms...
