- Acoustic Voice Quality Index as a Potential Tool for Voice ScreeningTo diminish the risk of voice disorders in people who are highly dependent on their voices, such as teachers, vocal screening is important already at the beginning of such individuals’ professional studies. A reliable, specified screening tool is needed. The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) has been found to differentiate normal voices from abnormal voices and to serve as a treatment outcome measure. This study investigated whether AVQI could

- Using FibroScan in The Clinic: Interview with Dr. Stephen A. HarrisonEchoSens creates non-invasive liver diagnosis medical devices. The company’s line of products, called FibroScan, work by measuring the speed of ultrasound waves as they move through liver tissue. This measurement can tell us about the state of the liver. For example, ultrasound waves move faster through fibrotic/scarred livers. EchoSens recently appointed Dominique Legros as their new global CEO, and we recently spoke about his plans for growth i
- Loop-X Surgical Imaging Robot UnveiledBrainlab, out of Germany, just unveiled its flagship Loop-X mobile intraoperative imaging robot specifically designed for spinal surgical procedures. Developed by medPhoton, an Austrian company, the device is now the core of Brainlab’s imaging offerings. The device offers 2D and 3D intraprocedural imaging, moving as necessary along with the surgical workflow and staying out of the way of clinicians and robotic instruments. Its actions can
- Temporary Medical Tattoos of Anatomy, Injuries, PathologiesPart of the difficulty in training the public in how to respond to medical emergencies is that many don’t understand the human anatomy below the skin. Moreover, knowing what different conditions actually look like on the body is another problem. Knowing where arteries run and where muscles connect to bone, as well as how bruises, infections, and orthopedic injuries appear, can be helpful in recognizing and addressing common maladies. Eliz
- New Chip for Microwave Imaging of BodyToday’s clinicians are limited to a few imaging modalities, primarily X-ray, CT, MRI, and ultrasound. Microwaves, in principle, can also be used as a useful way to look inside the body. Microwave radiation is non-ionizing, so should be safer than X-rays, but in practice microwave imagers, because of the electronics inside, have remained bulky tabletop devices. Not only have they been impractical for imaging the body, the electronics inside conven

- Asymmetric Synthesis of Chiral Sulfoximines via the S‐Alkylation of SulfinamidesInnovation in drug discovery critically depends on the development of new bioisosteric groups. Chiral sulfoximines, which contain a tetrasubstituted sulfur atom that bears one nitrogen, one oxygen, and two different carbon substituents, represent an emerging chiral bioisostere in medicinal chemistry. Chiral sulfoximines are conventionally prepared via the stereospecific nitrene transfer reaction to chiral sulfoxides; however, the number of readil

- Molecular Pivot‐Hinge Installation to Evolve Topology in Rare‐Earth Metal–Organic FrameworksMolecular pivot‐hinge installation is introduced as a linker desymmetrization strategy to evolve the topology of rare‐earth metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), where a pivot group is placed in the center of a linker similar to a hinge. By tuning the composition of pivot groups and steric hindrances of the substituents on various linker rotamers, MOFs with various topologies can be obtained. Abstract Linker desymmetrization has been witnessed a
- Synergistically Interactive Pyridinic‐N–MoP Sites: Identified Active Centers for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline SolutionThe effect of the dopant: In the electrocatalyst comprising MoP nanoparticles encapsulated by nitrogen‐doped carbon, the sites where MoP interacts with pyridinic N (but not pyrrolic N or graphitic N) lead to increased electron density on the nitrogen‐doped carbon, as well as optimized adsorption of H* and OH*, all of which help to accelerate the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media. Abstract For electrocatalysts for the hydrogen ev
- Water‐Mediated Synthesis of a Superionic Halide Solid ElectrolyteA superionic conductor, Li3InCl6, with room‐temperature Li+ conductivity of 2.04×10−3 S cm−1, is prepared by a facile and scalable water‐mediated synthesis route. The reversible conversion between Li3InCl6 and Li3InCl6⋅2 H2O makes it stable against air and humidity, thus ensuring the high ionic conductivity is recovered after conversion. Abstract To promote the development of solid‐state batteries, polymer‐, oxide‐, and sulfide‐based solid‐
- H2‐Acceptorless Dehydrogenative Boration and Transfer Boration of Alkenes Enabled by Zirconium CatalystThe first facile and direct H2‐acceptorless dehydrogenative boration of alkenes was achieved at room temperature in less than 10 min. Mechanistic studies revealed a reversible reaction pathway, which suggested the application of the zirconium catalyst as a “shuttle catalyst” for transfer boration, thus avoiding the use of relatively sensitive borane reagents. Abstract The first example of an efficient and direct dehydrogenative boration of
- Before and After Photoshop: Recursive Fraud in the Age of Digital Reproducibility“Word‐processing software, SCIgen, or Photoshop have increased fraudulent output, but … they have also changed the very form of fraud. Photoshop and similar tools are thus enabling something that is categorically new: recursive fraud, that is, the serial digital reproduction and dissemination of more fraud.” Read more in the Guest Editorial by M. - Catalytic Difunctionalization of Unactivated Alkenes with Unreactive Hexamethyldisilane through Regeneration of Silylium IonsA metal‐free, intermolecular syn ‐addition of hexamethyldisilane across simple alkenes is reported. The catalytic cycle is initiated and propagated by the transfer of a methyl group from the disilane to a silylium‐ion‐like intermediate, corresponding to the (re)generation of the silylium‐ion catalyst. The key feature of the reaction sequence is the cleavage of the Si–Si bond in a 1,3‐silyl shift from silicon to carbon. A central intermediate of

- Chiral Supramolecular Nano‐Architectures from Macroscopic Mechanical Rotations: Effects on Chiral Aggregation Behavior of PhthalocyaninesAbstract: Fluid dynamics, resulting from the macroscopic mechanical rotation of a rotary evaporator or a magnetic stirrer, has been shown to selectively induce one of two enantiomers (mirror‐image structures) in certain nanoscale supramolecules. This has attracted considerable attention from the viewpoint of novel synthetic methods for chiral molecules and provides a clue to explain the biased distribution of L‐amino acids and D‐sugars in biologi
