Ontogeny and homology of cranial bones associated with lateral‐line canals of the Senegal Bichir, Polypterus senegalus (Actinopterygii: Cladistii: Polypteriformes), with a discussion on the formation of lateral‐line canal bones in fishes
We describe the development of bones associated with lateral‐line canals in the Senegal Bichir and use these data to re‐address previous hypotheses of homology of skull bones of polypterids. We demonstrate that the lateral‐line canals comprise a separate component of the dermatocranium that may interact with a membranodermal component, forming compound bones in the adult. Our results shed light on controversies about the identity of skull bones in Polypteridae and suggest the presence of an ancestral...

Partner bereavement and risk of chronic urticaria, alopecia areata and vitiligo: cohort studies in the United Kingdom and Denmark
Abstract The pathogeneses of skin diseases are not fully understood. Psychological stress has been proposed to be associated with skin diseases, but the epidemiological evidence is limited [1, 2]. We have recently reported the associations between partner bereavement (an extreme life stressor) and psoriasis, atopic eczema and melanoma [3, 4]. In this study, we further investigated whether partner bereavement was associated with urticaria, alopecia areata, or vitiligo.

Novel nicastrin mutation in hidradenitis suppurativa‐Dowling Degos disease clinical phenotype: more than just clinical overlap?
Abstract In familial hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), mutations in the genes encoding three subunits of the ‐secretase complex, PSEN1, PSENEN and NCSTN, have pointed to an impaired NOTCH signalling as a pathogenic disease mechanism.1 Dowling Degos Disease (DDD; MIM 179850, 615327, and 615696)―a rare reticulated pigmentary disorder― has also been associated with a deficient NOTCH signalling and patients with mutations in PSENEN suffering from both disorders seem to confirm a potential link between...

What’s in? What’s out? Updating the British Society for Cutaneous Allergy Facial Series
Summary Background Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to cosmetics is widely reported. To ensure we are accurately diagnosing ACD, patch test series should be continually reviewed to identify relevant and emerging allergens and highlight those which are outdated. The current British Society for Cutaneous Allergy (BSCA) facial series recommends 26 allergens and was last modified in 2012. Objectives To review and update the BSCA facial series. Methods We retrospectively reviewed...

Dermatologic adverse events associated with use of oral mechanistic target of rapamycin inhibitors in a cohort of individuals with tuberous sclerosis complex
Abstract Systemic inhibitors of mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) have antiproliferative, antiangiogenic, and immunosuppressive properties. In dermatology, they are effective for managing certain vascular anomalies and genodermatoses, notably tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).1 Compared to cancer patients or transplant recipients, TSC patients are prescribed mTOR inhibitors at lower doses and their treatment regimens are less likely to include other drugs that may induce similar side effects.

Molecular subtype, biological sex and age shape melanoma tumour evolution
Summary Background Many cancer types display sex and age disparity in incidence and outcome. The mutational load of tumours, including melanoma, varies according to sex and age. However, there are no tools to systematically explore if clinical variables such as age and sex determine the genomic landscape of cancer. Objectives To establish a mathematical approach using melanoma mutational data to analyze how sex and age shape the tumour genome. Methods We model how age‐related...

Potential role of insulin on the pathogenesis of depression
Abstract The regulation of insulin on depression and depression‐like behaviour has been widely reported. Insulin and activation of its receptor can promote learning and memory, affect the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal axis (HPA) balance, regulate the secretion of neurotrophic factors and neurotransmitters, interact with gastrointestinal microbiome, exert neuroprotective effects and have an impact on depression. However, the role of insulin on depression remains largely unclear. Therefore, in this...
