Using Preimplanted Deep Brain Stimulation Electrodes for Rescue Thalamotomy in a Case of Holmes Tremor: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Background: Chronic stimulation of the thalamus is a surgical option in the management of intractable Holmes tremor. Patients with deep brain stimulation (DBS) can encounter infection as a postoperative complication, necessitating explantation of the hardware. Some studies have reported on the technique and the resulting efficacy of therapeutic lesioning through implanted DBS leads before their explantation. Case Description: We report the case of a patient with Holmes tremor who had stable control...

Anterior Limb of Internal Capsule and Bed Nucleus of Stria Terminalis Stimulation for Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in Adolescence: A Case of Success
Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a neurobehavioral disorder comprising motor and vocal tics. In most cases it is associated with other disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In refractory cases deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a valid treatment option. This paper describes the case of a 15-year-old adolescent with an extremely refractory GTS with associated OCD. The patient developed catatonia associated with OCD, which partially remitted after electroconvulsive therapy. At...

TIGIT enhances CD4+ regulatory T‐cell response and mediates immune suppression in a murine ovarian cancer model
TIGIT enhanced CD4+ Tregs response and mediated immune suppression in OC; TIGIT is a potential target in OC patients. Abstract Ovarian cancer (OC) is the fifth‐leading cause of cancer‐related death in women with a pathogenesis involving activation of regulatory T cells (Tregs). The T‐cell immunoglobulin and ITIM domain (TIGIT) is a well‐known immune checkpoint molecule that inhibits T‐cell responses. However, the role of TIGIT in OC is not comprehensively understood. In this study, we revealed...

Treatment patterns and outcomes in pancreatic cancer: Retrospective claims analysis
In a real‐world retrospective study, 57% of patients with advanced metastatic pancreatic cancer did not receive chemotherapy. Total healthcare costs were higher for patients treated with fluorouracil‐based regimens, and lower with gemcitabine‐based regimens. Abstract Background Pancreatic cancer represents the third leading cause of US cancer deaths, with median survival <1 year. The goal of this study was to describe systemic treatments, healthcare utilization and costs, and overall survival...

Prostate cancer in Pennsylvania: The role of older age at diagnosis, aggressiveness, and environmental risk factors on treatment and mortality using data from the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry
We analyzed prostate cancer registry data for >90 000 men ages 40‐105 to understand age‐related associations with disease aggressiveness, treatment and potential role of environmental/behavioral risk factors in understanding likelihood of treatment recommendations and impact on mortality. Men older than 75 years were more likely to have aggressive disease but less likely to receive any treatment. The oldest men also had the greatest survival benefits from any treatment. We also provide insight...

The relationship between sexual activity and sexual attitudes among breast cancer survivors in China
Most Chinese BCSs were sexually inactive. The sexual misconceptions about cancer were great barriers of sexual activity. Professional sexual education and consultation may be regarded as easy and effective intervention measures to improve BCSs' sexual cognition, and finally improving the overall sexual health for BCSs. Abstract Purpose Less is known about sexual attitudes of breast cancer survivors (BCSs) and its association with sexual activity and sexual dissatisfaction. Methods We investigated...

Clinicopathological features, survival outcomes, and appropriate surgical approaches for stage I acinar and papillary predominant lung adenocarcinoma
This SEER based study which we aimed to evaluate the prognosis difference of acinar predominant carcinoma (ACN) and papillary predominant adenocarcinoma (PAP) patients after lobectomy with mediastinal lymph node dissection and explored the best surgical treatment for each type. Our data suggested that ACN have a better OS and LCSS than that with PAP. For patients with stage I ACN, Seg and Lob, rather than Wed, seem to be an equivalent treatment choice, and for patients with PAP, Lob tends to be a...

Functional informed genome‐wide interaction analysis of body mass index, diabetes and colorectal cancer risk
Novel findings of this study include: the genetically predicted expressions of FOXA1, PSMC5 and CD33 modified the association of BMI on CRC risk for men; KIAA0753 and SCN1B modified the association of BMI on CRC risk for women; and PTPN2 modified the association between diabetes and CRC risk in both sexes. These findings provide support for potential new biological insights that could help in understanding the underlying mechanisms of BMI and diabetes on CRC. Abstract Background Body mass index...

Early variations in lymphocytes and T lymphocyte subsets are associated with radiation pneumonitis in lung cancer patients and experimental mice received thoracic irradiation
We found lower levels of lymphocyte and CD4+ T lymphocyte linked with radiation pneumonitis and dynamic change of lymphocyte and CD4+ T lymphocyte predict radiation pneumonitis after 182 cases of lung cancer patients with radiation pneumonitis were retrospectively analyzed. The relation of lymphocytes change and radiation pneumonitis was also confirmed in mice model. Therefore, decrease in lymphocyte and CD4+ T lymphocyte was able to act as a predictor of radiation pneumonitis in patients who received...

Molecular profiling of gastric cancer in a population with high HIV prevalence reveals a shift to MLH1 loss but not the EBV subtype
Human immunodeficiency virus infection is associated active Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV) infection. We found that this does not necessarily translate into an increased proportion of EBV‐associated gastric cancer. We also found a much higher proportion of microsatellite unstable tumors than that reported elsewhere. These findings provide good preliminary data that could be helpful in understanding not only gastric carcinogenesis but probably avenues for new therapies as well. Abstract The human immunodeficiency...

Fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 gene amplification and protein expression in human lung cancer
Fibroblast growh factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) is considered a potential molecular target in squamous cell lung cancer. However, prevalence of gene amplification as well as correlation to protein overexpression have to be established. Our work has evaluated prevalence and correlation of FGFR1 gene amplification and protein expression in 421 lung cancer patient samples. Abstract Background Targeting fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) is a potential treatment for squamous cell lung cancer...

Molecular natural history of breast cancer: Leveraging transcriptomics to predict breast cancer progression and aggressiveness
Breast cancer is a continuous disease and RNA expression dynamically changes with disease progression. Additionally, cellular growth rate is encoded in RNA expression. Abstract Background Characterizing breast cancer progression and aggressiveness relies on categorical descriptions of tumor stage and grade. Interpreting these categorical descriptions is challenging because stage convolutes the size and spread of the tumor and no consensus exists to define high/low grade tumors. Methods...

Influence of sitting behaviors on sleep disturbance and memory impairment in breast cancer survivors
Greater daily sitting among breast cancer survivors was associated with greater memory impairments, and this relationship was partially mediated by sleep disturbance. Screen‐based sitting behaviors may have the strongest influence on memory perceptions. Abstract Background The purpose was to prospectively examine the effects of sedentary behaviors on subjective memory impairment in breast cancer survivors (BCS) and the extent to which sleep disturbances mediated this pathway. Methods BCS...

Prediagnostic adult body mass index change and esophageal adenocarcinoma survival
Body mass index (BMI) gain in adulthood before cancer onset is associated with poor overall survival among esophageal adenocarcinoma patients, independent of BMI at diagnosis. Despite some reports that higher BMI may be protective for survival, we found no survival benefit of adding body weight prior to diagnosis, and suspect previous findings are driven by reverse causation. Abstract Background We examined whether body mass index (BMI) changes in adulthood, prior to disease onset, are associated...
