Comparison of two dental prescale systems used for the measurement of occlusal force
Abstract The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between two types of dental prescale systems. Forty healthy subjects were asked to maximally clench for about 3 s, and the maximum occlusal force before and after cleaning was calculated using an Occluzer FPD707 for dental prescale (P1) and a bite force analyzing system for dental prescale II (P2). The maximum occlusal forces measured by P1 and P2 were compared before cleaning and after cleaning. Next, the relationship...

Friedman Score in Relation to Compliance and Treatment Response in Nonsevere Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Nonsevere obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is most often treated with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device or a mandibular advancement splint (MAS). However, patient compliance with these treatments is difficult to predict. Improvement in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) is also somewhat unpredictable in MAS treatment. In this study, we investigated the association between Friedman tongue position score (Friedman score) and both treatment compliance and AHI improvement in patients with nonsevere...

The anatomical features of denticulate ligament in human fetuses
Abstract Purpose To determine the morphological features of the denticulate ligament in fetal period. Methods Twelve formalin-fixed fetuses (six females and six males) with a mean gestational age of 27.0 ± 2.04 weeks (range between 25 and 32 weeks) were dissected to reveal morphological properties of the denticulate ligaments. ...

The Situational Mental File Account of the False Belief Tasks: A New Solution of the Paradox of False Belief Understanding
Abstract How can we solve the paradox of false-belief understanding: if infants pass the implicit false belief task (FBT) by nonverbal behavioural responses why do they nonetheless typically fail the explicit FBT till they are 4 years old? Starting with the divide between situational and cognitive accounts of the development of false-belief understanding, we argue that we need to consider both situational and internal cognitive factors together and describe their interaction to...

Losing a Radiant Star – Dr. Edward C. De Fabo (1937‐2019)
ABSTRACT On December 24, 2019, the pigment, melanoma, and photobiology research communities lost a treasure. Dr. Edward De Fabo passed away peacefully after a valiant 5‐year battle against advanced colon cancer. He was 82. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Dr. Frances Noonan, who had also been his scientific partner. Together, they were a remarkable team, seeking and finding answers to critical scientific questions that had plagued researchers for decades.

Immunophenotypic Profiles in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) a long-known endocrinopathy and one of the most common endocrine-reproductive-metabolic disorders in women, which can lead to infertility. Although the precise etiology remains unclear, PCOS is considered as a complex genetic trait, with a high degree of heterogeneity. Besides, hormones and immune cells, including both innate and adaptive immune cells, are reportedly a cross talk in PCOS. Chronic low-grade inflammation increases autoimmune disease risk. This proinflammatory...

The Immune Cell Landscape in Different Anatomical Structures of Knee in Osteoarthritis: A Gene Expression-Based Study
Background. Immunological mechanisms play a vital role in the pathogenesis of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Moreover, the immune phenotype is a relevant prognostic factor in various immune-related diseases. In this study, we used CIBERSORT for deconvolution of global gene expression data to define the immune cell landscape of different structures of knee in osteoarthritis. Methods and Findings. By applying CIBERSORT, we assessed the relative proportions of immune cells in 76 samples of knee cartilage,...

Efficacy of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy for Lateral Epicondylitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Background. Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a common elbow problem. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) was widely used in the treatment of LE and has been shown to relieve the pain and functional impairment (loss of grip strength) caused by tennis elbow. However, the evidence with regard to whether ESWT has better clinical efficacy over other method is not clear. The aim of the study was to compare the effectiveness of ESWT with other techniques in the treatment of LE. Methods. Literature searches...

Aspirin Improves Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Atherosclerosis through Regulation of the PPARδ-AMPK-PGC-1α Pathway in Dyslipidemic Conditions
This study is aimed at elucidating how aspirin could systemically and simultaneously normalize nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and atherosclerosis through both in vitro and in vivo studies in hyperlipidemic conditions. We evaluated the effects and mechanism of aspirin on the levels of various biomarkers related to NAFLD, atherosclerosis, and oxidative phosphorylation in cells and animals of hyperlipidemic conditions. The protein levels of biomarkers (PPARδ, AMPK, and PGC-1α) involved in...

Material and Methods. As a model of the human jaw due to the analogy of bone structure and hardness, pig ribs were used. Drills from three different implant systems were used in the study: Straumann® (Straumann GmbH, Basel, Switzerland), AnyRidge® (Megagen...

The Ever-Expanding Balloon—Is Profit Shaping Practice?
In the study by Kasle and colleagues in this issue of JAMA Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the authors report that use of balloon catheter dilation of the sinuses is increasing rapidly, along with concomitant Medicare payments. The increase in payments in the study is stunning, even though it is only reflective of the Medicare population. Interestingly, this increase is driven by a relatively small proportion of otolaryngologist–head and neck surgeons. Estimates from industry colleagues suggest...

Concerns About Methodology in Study of Thyroid Nodule Gene Expression Classifier—Reply
In Reply We appreciate Dr Kloos’s interest in our work, but respectfully disagree with his conclusions. He states that our analysis supports Afirma’s validated 94% or greater negative predictive value (NPV) on the basis that only 23 of the 1071 (2.1%) Afirma gene expression classifier (GEC) benign nodules were reported as malignant on surgical pathologic analysis. However, only a total of 149 such nodules were actually resected in the postmarketing studies, yielding a false-negative rate of 15.4%...

Minimizing Excess Opioid Prescribing for Acute Postoperative Pain
The United States is struggling with an epidemic of opioid abuse driven in part by postoperative opioid prescribing patterns. Opioid prescribing after surgery is one of the most common methods of initial opioid exposure and places patients at risk of developing opioid dependency. In otolaryngology, 6% of the patients who are opioid-naive develop postoperative iatrogenic opioid dependency, which contributes considerably to the epidemic because approximately 16 million otolaryngology operations are...
