Abstract The targeted delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs is a major challenge in the clinical treatment of cancer. Herein
- Lewis Acid‐Catalyzed Transfer Hydromethallylation for the Construction of Quaternary Carbon CentersThe design and gram‐scale synthesis of a cyclohexa‐1,4‐diene‐based surrogate of isobutene gas is reported. Using the highly electron‐deficient Lewis acid B(C6F5)3, its application in the hydromethallylation of electon‐rich styrene derivatives to provide sterically congested quaternary carbon centers was achieved. The reaction proceeds by C(sp3)–C(sp3) bond formation at a tertiary carbenium ion that is generated by alkene protonation. The possibil
- Renal‐clearable Molecular Semiconductor for Second Near‐Infrared Fluorescence Imaging of Kidney DysfunctionReal‐time imaging of kidney function is important to assess the nephrotoxicity of drugs and monitor the progression of renal diseases; however, it remains challenging because of the lack of optical agents with high renal clearance and high signal‐to‐background ratio (SBR). Herein, a second near‐infrared (NIR‐II) fluorescent molecular semiconductor (CDIR2) is synthesized for real‐time imaging of kidney dysfunction in living mice. CDIR2 not only ha
- Molybdenum Alkylidyne Complexes with Tripodal Silanolate Ligands: The Next Generation of Alkyne Metathesis CatalystsA new type of molybdenum alkylidyne catalyst for alkyne metathesis is described, which is distinguished by an unconventional podand topology. These structurally well‐defined complexes are easy to make on scale and proved to be tolerant toward numerous functional groups; even certain protic substituents were found to be compatible. The new catalysts were characterized by X‐ray crystallography and by spectroscopic means, including 95Mo NMR.
- A Diruthenium‐Based Mixed Spin Complex Ru₂⁵+(S=1/2)‐CN‐Ru₂⁵+(S=3/2)An unusual tetra‐nuclear linear cyanido‐bridged complex [Ru2(μ‐ap)4‐CN‐Ru2(μ‐ap)4](BPh4) (1) (ap= 2‐anilinopyridinate) has been synthesized and well characterized. The crystallographic data, magnetic measurement, IR, EPR and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that complex 1 is the first example of mixed spin Ru₂⁵+ ‐ based complex with uncommon electronic configurations of S=1/2 for the cyanido‐C bound Ru₂⁵+ and S=3/2 for the cyanido‐N bo
- Indeno[1,2‐b]carbazole as Methoxy‐Free Donor Group to Construct Efficient and Stable Hole‐Transporting Materials for Perovskite Solar CellsWith perovskite‐based solar cells (PSCs) now reaching efficiencies >20%, the stability of PSCs devices has become a critical challenge for commercialization. However, most efficient hole‐transporting materials (HTMs) thus far still rely on the state‐of‐the‐art methoxy triphenylamine (MOTPA) donor unit in which methoxy groups usually reduce the device stability. Herein, a carbazole‐fluorene hybrid has been employed as methoxy‐free donor to cons
- Rapid Chemical Reaction Monitoring by Digital Microfluidics‐NMR: Proof of Principle Towards an Automated Synthetic Discovery PlatformMicrocoil Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been interfaced with digital microfluidics (DMF) and is applied to monitor organic reactions in organic solvents as a proof of concept. DMF permits droplets to be moved and mixed inside the NMR to initiate reactions while using sub‐microliter volumes of reagent, opening up the potential to follow the reactions of scarce or expensive reagents. By setting up the spectrometer shims on a reagent droplet,
- Modification of Enzyme Activity by Vibrational Strong Coupling of WaterVibrational strong coupling (VSC) has recently emerged as a completely new tool for influencing chemical reactivity. It harnesses electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations through the creation of hybrid states of light and matter, called polaritonic states, in an optical cavity resonant to a molecular absorption band. Here, we investigate the effect of vibrational strong coupling of water on the enzymatic activity of pepsin, where water molecule is dir
- Visualization and in‐situ ablation of intracellular bacterial pathogen through metabolic labelingProtected by the host cells, the hidden intracellular bacteria are typically difficult to kill by common antibiotics and these bacteria cannot be visualized without complex cellular pretreatments. Herein, we successfully developed a bacteria‐metabolizable dual‐functional probe TPEPy‐D‐Ala, which is based on D‐alanine and a photosensitizer with aggregation‐induced emission for fluorescence turn‐on imaging of intracellular bacteria in living host c
- A Safe, Low‐Cost, Fast‐Kinetics and Low‐Strain Inorganic‐Open‐Framework Anode for Potassium‐Ion BatteriesA key challenge for potassium‐ion batteries is to explore low‐cost electrode materials that allow fast and reversible insertion of large‐ionic‐size K+. Here, we report an inorganic‐open‐framework anode (KTiOPO4) which achieves a reversible capacity of up to 102 mAh/g (307 mAh/cm3), flat voltage plateaus at a safe average potential of 0.82 V (vs K/K+), a long lifespan over 200 cycles, and K+‐transport kinetics of ~10 times faster than those of Na
- Observation and kinetic characterization of transient Schiff base intermediates by CEST NMRIn aqueous solution, many biochemical reaction pathways involve reaction of an aldehyde with an amine, which progresses through generally unstable hydrated and dehydrated Schiff base intermediates that often are unobservable by conventional NMR. There are 4 states in the relevant equilibrium: (1) gem‐diol ↔ (2) aldehyde ↔ (3) hemiaminal ↔ (4) Schiff base. We show that for the reaction between protein amino groups and DOPAL, a highly toxic metabol
- Dinuclear Metal‐ProPhenol Catalysts: Development and Synthetic ApplicationsThe ProPhenol ligand is a member of the chiral azacrown family that spontaneously forms a bimetallic complex upon treatment with alkyl metal reagents, such as Et2Zn and Bu2Mg. The resulting complex features Lewis acidic and Brønsted basic sites, enabling simultaneous activation of both nucleophile and electrophile in the same chiral environment. Since the initial report in 2000, metal‐ProPhenol catalysts have been used to facilitate a broad range
- Xe Recovery by DD3R Zeolite Membranes ‐ Application in AnaestheticsXe is only produced by cryogenic distillation of air, and its availability is limited by the extremely low abundance. Therefore, Xe recovery after usage is the only way to guarantee sufficient supply and broad application. Herein we demonstrate DD3R zeolite as a benchmark membrane material for CO2/Xe separation. The CO2 permeance after an optimized membrane synthesis is one order magnitude higher than for conventional membranes and is less suscep
- Metastable Self‐Assembly of Theta‐Shaped Colloids and Twinning of Their Crystal PhasesAnisotropic colloids have self‐assembly crystal structures and paths different from spherical colloids. Exploring and understanding their self‐assembly behavior provide insights that can be used to create new materials with hierarchical structures through a bottom‐up process. Herein, we report an observation of metastable self‐assembly of theta‐shaped SiO2 colloids interacting with a depletion force in a quasi‐two‐dimensional space and show that
- Unveiling the neutral forms of glutamineNeutral glutamine has been evaporated by laser ablation of its solid sample to seed a rare gas carrier prior to a supersonic expansion and proved by Fourier transform microwave techniques. We report on three distinct neutral conformers that show a singular non‐interacting and flexible amide sidechain in contrast with the other proteinogenic aliphatic amino acids. It could explain the essential biological role of glutamine as a nitrogen source, an
- Cs₂Bi₂O(Ge₂O₇) (CBGO): Larger SHG Effect Induced by Synergistic Polarizations of BiO₅ Polyhedra and GeO₄ TetrahedraA novel cesium bismuth germanate, Cs2Bi2O(Ge2O7) (CBGO), was synthesized by traditional high temperature solid state reaction. Its structure features a 3D network composed of a 1D chains composed of Bi2O8 dimers that are further bridged by Ge2O7 dimers, forming tunnels of seven member rings (MRs) that are filled by the Cs+ cations. CBGO exhibits extraordinary larger Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) response of about 13.7 times that of KDP (KH2PO4
- Pressure‐Induced Emission (PIE) and Phase Transition of a Two‐dimensional Halide Double Perovskite (BA)4AgBiBr8 (BA = CH3(CH2)3NH3+)Two‐dimensional (2D) halide perovskites have attracted significant attention due in part to their compositional flexibility and electronic diversity. Understanding the structure property relationships in 2D double perovskites is essential for their development for optoelectronic applications. In this work, we observed the emergence of pressure‐induced emission (PIE) at 2.5 GPa with a broad emission band and large Stokes shift from initially nonfl
- Elucidating the mechanism of working SnO2 gas sensors using combined operando UV‐Vis / Raman / IR spectroscopySnO2 is the most widely used metal‐oxide gas sensing material but a detailed understanding of its functioning is still missing despite its relevance for applications. To gain new mechanistic insight into SnO2 gas sensors under working conditions we have developed an operando approach based on combined UV‐Vis, Raman, and FT‐IR spectroscopy, allowing us for the first time to relate the sensor response to the concentration of oxygen vacancies in
- Tetracrystalline Tetrablock Quarterpolymers: Four Different Crystallites under the Same RoofMulticrystalline block copolymers having three or more crystalline segments are essential materials for the advancement of physics in the field of crystallinity. Due to the challenging synthesis of multicrystalline polymers only a limited number of tricrystalline terpolymers are reported until now. We report, for the first time, the synthesis of poly(ethylene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(L‐Lactide) (PE‐b‐PEO‐b‐PCL‐b‐PLLA)
