Recurrent Primary Intrasellar Paraganglioma
We describe a case of an 81-year-old male presenting with bitemporal visual field defects and blurry vision in the right eye. The patient was found to have a recurrent primary paraganglioma in the sellar and suprasellar region requiring a repeat transsphenoidal endoscopic resection. Immunohistochemical examination confirmed paraganglioma with the classic zellballen appearance which stained positive for chromogranin, synaptophysin, and S-100 in the periphery. Paragangliomas (PGLs) in the sella turcica...

Optogenetic activation of Type III taste cells modulates taste responses
AbstractStudies have suggested that communication between taste cells shapes the gustatory signal before transmission to the brain. To further explore the possibility of intragemmal signal modulation, we adopted an optogenetic approach to stimulate sour-sensitive (Type III) taste cells using mice expressing Cre recombinase under a specific Type III cell promoter, Pkd2l1 (Polycystic kidney Disease-2-Like 1), crossed with mice expressing Cre-dependent Channelrhodopsin (ChR2). The application of blue...

Wnt antagonist DKK‐1 levels in systemic sclerosis are lower in skin but not blood and is regulated by microRNA33a‐3p
Abstract Background Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune skin disease which is associated with inflammation and resulting skin fibrosis. Myofibroblasts are the key cell type associated with the fibrosis but how they are differentiated is not clear. DKK‐1 is a Wnt antagonist that blocks Wnt‐mediated fibrosis and is reduced in fibrotic conditions. Thus DKK‐1 is a clear negative regulator of fibrosis in systemic sclerosis and its regulation is unknown. The aim of this work is to determine the levels...

H2O2‐induced oxidative stress disrupts mitochondrial functions and impairs migratory potential of human epidermal melanocytes
Abstract Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have already been demonstrated to impede the migratory ability in non‐melanocytic cell lines by depleting mitochondrial ATP production. Therefore, understanding the mitochondrial metabolic response to migration in the presence of ROS should be a key to understanding repigmentation in vitiligo. This study aimed to investigate the energy mechanism associated with the ROS‐mediated attenuation of melanocyte migration. After melanocytes were pretreated with H2O2,...

Neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio as a prognostic indicator for overall and cancer‐specific survival in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck
Abstract Background Neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a biomarker that is correlated with systemic inflammation and poor prognosis in solid tumors. We investigated the value of NLR in predicting survival in a large population of head and neck cancer patients in the United States. Methods We performed a retrospective cohort study of Veterans Affairs patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) diagnosed between January 2000 and December 2017. We compared 5‐year overall...

Human Tissue Kallikreins in Polymorphous Adenocarcinoma: A Polymerase Chain Reaction and Immunohistochemical Study
Abstract Polymorphous adenocarcinoma (PAC) is the second most common malignant salivary gland tumour of minor salivary glands. Human tissue kallikreins (KLKs) are a family of highly conserved serine proteases expressed by various tissues and organs. The literature demonstrates a link between KLKs and salivary gland neoplasms. The purpose of this study was to determine levels of KLK mRNA in tissue samples of PAC and to determine if KLK expression is limited to tumour cells. Nineteen...

Clinical and radiological evolution of cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related inflammation in the context of anti-PD-1 immunotherapy
Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) are a frequent complication of immunotherapy, but neurological irAEs are rare and varied. Here, we present a case of cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related inflammation (CAA-ri) attributable to nivolumab monotherapy, which has not been previously reported. The context of immunotherapy and availability of serial imaging also provide unique insights into the pathogenesis and evolution of CAA-ri. Routine surveillance neuroimaging in a patient with metastatic melanoma,...

MEK inhibitors combined with programmed cell death-1 blockade immunotherapy for metastatic uveal melanoma: is it warranted?
In the setting of metastatic uveal melanoma (mUM), prognosis is dismal and treatment options are limited. MEK inhibition using selumetinib has led to promising results with improved progression-free survival. While immune checkpoint inhibitors such as programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) blockade therapy (anti-PD-1) has shown discrete efficacy in mUM, combining MEK inhibitors (MEKi) to anti-PD-1 might be an option as such combinations have shown synergistic efficacy in metastatic cutaneous melanoma. We...

Contralateral Nodal Metastasis from Tongue Malignancy
Abstract Oral cavity is the most common site of cancer in India, tongue forms the most common single subsite. Neck node involvement plays an important prognostic role in disease-free survival and overall survival. Most of the nodal metastasis are occult and only an elective neck dissection can disclose the nodal metastasis, which is accepted only when the risk of metastasis exceeds 15–20%. Contralateral nodal metastasis(CLNM) are rarely analyzed due to sparse event.Retrospective...

Consequences of Mastoidectomy on Bone Conducted Sound Based on Simulations in a Whole Human Head
Hypothesis: The aim of this study is to investigate how a mastoidectomy surgery affects bone conduction (BC) sound transmission using a whole head finite element model. Background: Air conduction (AC) and BC hearing thresholds are normally used to evaluate the effect of an ear surgery. It is then assumed that the BC hearing thresholds are unaffected by the surgery. Moreover, BC hearing aids are used in cases of unilateral or conductive hearing loss in heads that have undergone a mastoidectomy...

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of the great classical composer, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827), we point out how his hearing loss affected him and how the primitive hearing aids at that time helped mitigate his hearing loss. From the age of 26, Beethoven began to suffer from a fluctuating, progressive hearing loss (“my hearing grew worse and worse”), This started in his left ear (“in my left ear, with which this illness of my ears had started”), where he had difficulty hearing...

An improved matrix‐based endovascular guidewire position simulation using fusiform ternary tree
Abstract In this paper, a new matrix‐based method is proposed to real‐time determine the guidewire position inside an arterial system. The guidewire path is obtained by the optimal path method, particularly, the fusiform ternary tree method according to the principle of minimum output value of root node. An adaptive sampling strategy, and an optimization strategy based on proximal end and distal end of the guidewire are proposed to change the guidewire position for obtaining an ideal guidewire path....
