Evidence for age‐related differences in heat acclimatization responsiveness
New Findings What is the central question of this study? Repeated heat exposure during the summer months can enhance heat loss in humans (seasonal heat acclimatization), but does the magnitude of that enhancement differ between young and older adults when assessed during passive heat exposure? What is the main finding and its importance? While seasonal heat acclimatization enhanced evaporative heat loss (i.e., sweating) in both young and older adults, those improvements led to...

Sitting decreases endothelial microparticles but not circulating angiogenic cells irrespective of lower leg exercises: A randomized cross‐over trial
New Findings What is the central question of this study? Prolonged sitting increases risk for cardiovascular disease, but the cellular and molecular determinants remain unknown. What is the main finding and its importance? Prolonged sitting, independent of calf raise interruption strategies, decreases MP counts linked to endothelial activation and apoptosis. An acute bout of prolonged sitting appears to promote paradoxical decreases in microparticle counts, but the implications...

Chronic REM sleep restriction in young rats increases energy expenditure with no change in food intake
New Findings What is the central question of this study? Sleep restriction produces metabolic changes and increased food intake in adult rats; however, few studies assessed these parameters in young animals. This study examined the effects of different periods of REM sleep restriction (7, 14 and 21 days) on metabolic parameters in young rats and proposed a correction factor for the measurement of food intake. What is the main finding and its importance? Animals submitted to each...

The influence of habitual endurance exercise on carotid artery strain and strain‐rate in young and middle‐aged men
New Findings What is the central question of this study? Carotid artery peak circumferential strain (PCS) and strain‐rate attenuate with age, but appear to be modulated by cardiorespiratory fitness status in young males. However, the relationship between habitual endurance exercise (running) and these parameters has not been studied in young and middle‐aged men. What is the main finding and its importance? Young and middle‐aged runners exhibited elevated PCS and systolic strain‐rate...

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular responses to cardio‐respiratory events in preterm infants during the transitional period
Key points Non‐invasive simultaneous multiparametric monitoring allows the in vivo evaluation of cerebral and cardiovascular haemodynamic responses to different types of recurrent episodes of intermittent hypoxia and/or bradycardia, also defined as cardio‐respiratory events (CRE), in preterm neonates during postnatal transition. By decreasing left cardiac output, bradycardia further contributes to cerebral hypoxia during CRE. The presence of a haemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus...

AMP‐activated protein kinase activator AICAR attenuates hypoxia‐induced murine fetal growth restriction in part by improving uterine artery blood flow
Key points Pregnancy at high altitude is associated with a greater incidence of fetal growth restriction due, in part, to lesser uterine artery blood flow. AMP‐activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation vasodilates arteries and may increase uterine artery blood flow. In this study, pharmacologic activation of AMPK by the drug AICAR improved fetal growth and elevated uterine artery blood flow. These results suggest that AMPK activation is a potential strategy for improving fetal growth and raising...

Skeletal muscle AMPK is not activated during 2 hours of moderate intensity exercise at ∼65% VO2 peak in endurance trained men
Key points AMP‐activated protein kinase (AMPK) is considered a major regulator of skeletal muscle metabolism during exercise. However, we previously showed that although AMPK activity increases 8–10 fold during ∼120 min of exercise at ∼65% VO2 peak in untrained individuals, there is no increase in these individuals after only 10 days of exercise training (longitudinal study). In a cross‐sectional study we show that there is also a lack of activation of skeletal muscle AMPK during 120 min of...

Oral cancer stem cells drive tumourigenesis through activation of stromal fibroblasts
Abstract Background Cancer stem cells are responsible for tumour progression and chemoresistance. Fibroblasts surrounding a tumour also promote progression and fibroblast ‘activation’ is an independent prognostic marker in oral cancer. Cancer stem cells may therefore promote tumourigenesis through communication with stromal fibroblasts. Methods Cancer stem cells were isolated from oral cancer cell lines by adherence to fibronectin or cisplatin resistance. Fibroblasts were exposed to conditioned...

Emerging Role of Nanocarriers based Topical delivery of Anti‐Fungal Agents in Combating Growing Fungal Infections
Abstract The incidences of fungal infections have greatly increased over the past few years, particularly in humid and industrialized areas. The severity of such infections ranges from being asymptomatic‐mild to potentially life‐threatening systemic infections. There are limited classes of drugs that are approved for the treatment of such infections like polyenes, azoles and echinocandins. Some fungi have developed resistance to these drugs. Therefore, to counter drug resistance, intensive large...

Testing recommendation for COVID-19 and planned surgery
We found that the publication on “Testing recommendation for COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) in patients planned for surgery - continuing the service and 'suppressing' the pandemic” is very interesting.1 Al-Muharraqi noted that “The aforementioned recommendations may be expensive, but they can mitigate the risks to patients, staff, and public.1” In fact, surgeon has a high risk for contacting COVID-9 in clinical practice. The COVID-19 patient might be asymptomatic and COVID-19 transmission to surgeon is possible.

Extrinsic innervation of the pelvic organs in the lesser pelvis of human embryos
The umbilical arteries separate the lesser pelvis from the abdomen. Development of the inferior hypogastric plexus is divided into migration of neural crest cells (blue dots) to para‐ and pre‐arterial positions, followed by association of the ganglionic cell cluster with the superior hypogastric nerve, then the pelvic splanchnic nerves, and finally the sacral splanchnic nerves. Only thereafter nerves and ganglionic cells extend from this plexus along the bladder wall and the caudal hindgut. Abstract...

Cranial trepanation and healing process in modern patients—Bioarchaeological and anthropological implications
We investigated the macroscopic healing processes of the cranial vault based on CT scanning records of modern patients, in order to improve the positive and differential diagnosis of trepanations in archaeological samples. Our results have demonstrated how the inclination of the edges of a healed trepanation may be related to the healing process, and not only to the cranial opening technique, which now has to be taken into consideration when interpreting the procedures in past population. Abstract...

The vomeronasal organ of wild canids: the fox (Vulpes vulpes) as a model
We present the first morphofunctional study of the vomeronasal organ of a wild canid, the red fox, which highlights the importance of chemical communication in this species and opens a new perspective on the canid vomeronasal system. Abstract The vomeronasal system (VNS) has been extensively studied within specific animal families, such as Rodentia. However, the study of the VNS in other families, such as Canidae, has long been neglected. Among canids, the vomeronasal organ (VNO) has only been...

Functional morphology of the ankle extensor muscle‐tendon units in the springhare Pedetes capensis shows convergent evolution with macropods for bipedal hopping locomotion
The springhare’s overbuilt plantaris tendon likely allows rapid transfer of force from muscle to skeletal attachment points, facilitating fast and accelerative hopping in predator‐dense habitats. Abstract This study assesses the functional morphology of the ankle extensor muscle‐tendon units of the springhare Pedetes capensis , an African bipedal hopping rodent, to test for convergent evolution with the Australian bipedal hopping macropods. We dissect and measure the gastrocnemius, soleus,...

Muscle–tendon arrangement and innervation pattern of the m. flexor digitorum superficialis in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) and spider monkey (Ateles sp.)
We found that the muscle–tendon arrangement of the m. flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) was different among the common marmoset, squirrel monkey and spider monkey. However, the intramuscular nerve distribution pattern within the FDS was consistent. This consistent innervation pattern of the FDS suggests that muscle bellies that make up the FDS come from a common ancestral arrangement. Abstract The muscle–tendon arrangement of the m. flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) varies among different...
