Cytoarchitectural analysis of the neuron‐to‐glia association in the dorsal root ganglia of normal and diabetic mice
IB4+ non‐peptidergic DRG neurons form small cell clusters, whereas CGRP+ peptidergic ones are isolated. This configuration is maintained in diabetic mice. The marker of satellite glial cells glutamine synthetase was altered in diabetes according to the cell phenotype: it was increased around CGRP+ neurons and reduced around IB4+ ones. Ultrastructurally, the glial coverage was increased at the interface between IB4+ cluster cells in diabetic mice, with a reduction in the direct contact points between...

Femoral anteversion: significance and measurement
Femoral neck anteversion (FNA) is the angle between the femoral neck and femoral shaft, which affects the biomechanics of the hip. FNA changes substantially throughout growth, which may relate to motor development, and varies by up to 30° within adults. Several methods can be used to assess FNA, which may yield different values by up to 20° in the same participant. Treatment for clinically problematic FNA is usually de‐rotational osteotomy; passive, non‐operative methods do not have any effect....

From yellow to silver: Transforming cranial morphology in European eel (Anguilla anguilla)
During the metamorphosis from yellow to silver eels (Anguilla anguilla ), the cranial musculoskeletal system changes to prepare the eel for its 6500 km migration. Both the jaw and respiratory muscles increase in size, with the latter potentially being beneficial for swimming in deeper, and thus less oxygenated waters. Accordingly, the overall skull dimensions increase in size, most likely to accommodate the enlarging eyes and muscles ABSTRACT The European eel (Anguilla anguilla ) has been extensively...

Biologics as a therapeutic approach for a Th17‐mediated severe dermatitis in skin barrier disorders
Abstract Biologics are a promising treatment for immune‐mediated diseases in which the predominant pathogenic pathway is targeted. The use of biologics therapyfor epidermal barrier function‐impairingpathologiesfollows 3 strategies: tapering ofT helper (Th) 2responses; neutralization of non‐type 2 pathways such as Th17; or blockade of acute phase reactions such as those driven by interleukin (IL)‐6(1). Initially, the treatment of eczematous disorders focused on the Th2 response without considering...

Mechanism of azithromycin in airway diseases
Journal of International Medical Research, Volume 48, Issue 6, June 2020. Azithromycin (AZM) has been used to treat chronic inflammatory airway diseases because it regulates cell–cell contact between airway epithelial cells. Airway mucus hypersecretion is an important component of chronic respiratory diseases. Mucin 5AC (MUC5AC) is the major mucin produced by airway epithelial cells, and hypersecretion of MUC5AC is a sign of various pulmonary inflammatory diseases. Recently, it was found that matrix...

From Jekyll to Hyde: New study pinpoints mutation that makes E. coli deadlier
We all know that there are ''good'' and ''bad'' bacteria, but scientists have little insight into how bacteria become ''bad'' or ''pathogenic'' and cause disease. Now, a team of scientists has described how mutations resulting in the malformation of the lipopolysaccharide transporter -- an essential protein for bacterial growth-- caused a non-pathogenic Escherichia coli strain to become pathogenic.

Pattern analysis of phylogenetic trees could reveal connections between evolution, ecology
In biology, phylogenetic trees represent the evolutionary history and diversification of species -- the ''family tree'' of Life. Phylogenetic trees not only describe the evolution of a group of organisms but can also be constructed from the organisms within a particular environment or ecosystem, such as the human microbiome. In this way, they can describe how this ecosystem evolved and what its functional capabilities might be.

MicroCT reveals detailed head morphology of arthropod, Leanchoilia illecebrosa
Researchers used microCT to study and re-study arthropod fossils from the early Cambrian in the Chengjiang biota in the Yunnan Province of China. Their latest study shows with unprecedented clarity the head morphology of the species Leanchoilia illecebrosa and demonstrates the presence of a labrum thus supporting the hypothesis that megacheirans are distant relatives of modern chelicerates (e.g. horseshoe crabs, scorpions and spiders).

In the wild, chimpanzees are more motivated to cooperate than bonobos
Scientists investigated cooperation dynamics in wild chimpanzees (Tai, Ivory Coast) and bonobos (LuiKotale, DCR) using a snake model. While chimpanzees cooperate to defend their territory, bonobos do not. The study reveals no differences in both species' social intelligence but supports theories linking territoriality and in-group cooperation in humans since chimpanzees were more motivated to cooperate by informing others of a threat as compared to bonobos.

Individual-level pace-of-life syndromes in annual killifish are mediated by intersexual and interspecific differences
Abstract Pace-of-life syndromes (POLS) describe covariations between life history (such as growth rate and age at maturity), behaviour (e.g. activity or boldness) and physiology (e.g. metabolic rate) along an axis from fast to slow lifestyles. This powerful concept can be applicable at a range of scales, from broad interspecific contrasts to the individual intra-population level, though its generality has recently been questioned. Using two species of African annual fishes with...

Identification of Recurrent TERT Promoter Mutations in Intrathyroid Thymic Carcinomas
Abstract Intrathyroid thymic carcinoma (ITTC) is a rare malignant neoplasm considered to be a eutopic thymic carcinoma (TC) arising ectopically in the thyroid. Histopathologically, ITTC resembles squamous cell carcinoma of the thymus with positive TC markers such as CD5 and c-KIT. Despite these similar histological findings, ITTC is clinically less aggressive than TC. In this study, we compared clinical, histological, and genetic characteristics of ITTCs and TCs. We collected...
