Sleep‐disordered breathing in patients with stroke‐induced dysphagia
Abstract This study examined the nature and characteristics of sleep‐disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea, in patients with post‐stroke dysphagia, to determine the demographic, anthropometric and clinical variables that were associated with sleep‐disordered breathing. Thirty‐nine patients diagnosed with acute stroke (28 males and 11 females with a mean age of 72.3 ± 10.0 years) underwent overnight polysomnography (within 3.9 ± 1.6 days after admission)....

Novel [l,2,4]triazolo[3,4- a ]isoquinoline chalcones as new chemotherapeutic agents: Block IAP tyrosine kinase domain and induce both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of apoptosis
Summary Two novel chemotherapeutic chalcones were synthesized and their structures were confirmed by different spectral tools. Theoretical studies such as molecular modeling were done to detect the mechanism of action of these compounds. In vitro cytotoxicity showed a strong effect against all tested cell lines (MCF7, A459, HepG2, and HCT116), and low toxic effect against normal human melanocytes (HFB4). The lung carcinoma cell line was chosen for further molecular studies. Real-time...

Serum concentration of the CKD4/6 inhibitor abemaciclib, but not of creatinine, strongly predicts hematological adverse events in patients with breast cancer: a preliminary report
Summary Purpose The CKD4/6 inhibitor abemaciclib is related to adverse events such as hematological toxicity and increase in serum creatinine levels associated with abemaciclib pharmacokinetics. Increase in serum creatinine levels is considered a result of competition with abemaciclib via organic cation transporter 2 and multidrug and toxic compound extrusion. Therefore, we evaluated the association among serum creatinine levels, serum abemaciclib concentrations, and adverse events...

Early Cambrian fossil: Bizarre half-billion-year-old worm with tentacles solves evolutionary mystery
A half-a-billion years old fossil species of marine animal sheds light on how the anatomies of the two main types of an animal group called the hemichordates are related, and provides new evidence in the historical debate among zoologists. The fossils are over half-a-billion years old and were discovered at a Burgess Shale site in the Canadian Rockies.

Manuka honey versus saline sinus irrigation in the treatment of cystic fibrosis‐associated chronic rhinosinusitis: A randomized pilot trial
Abstract Objectives Manuka honey attacks biofilms, which contribute to bacterial persistence in cystic fibrosis sinusitis. The primary objective was to determine feasibility of investigating manuka honey as an irrigation treatment for cystic fibrosis sinusitis and secondarily to assess the treatment’s preliminary effectiveness. Design Prospective, single‐blinded (clinician only), randomized, parallel two‐armpilot trial. Setting Tertiary rhinology clinic. Participants Subjects...

Anesthesiologist behavior and anesthesia machine use in the operating room during the COVID-19 pandemic: awareness and changes to cope with the risk of infection transmission
Abstract The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease [coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection] first appeared in December 2019 in China and is now spreading worldwide. Because SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted via aerosols and surface contaminations of the environment, appropriate use of anesthesia machines and appropriate behavior in the operation room (OR) are required specifically in relation to this disease. The use of high-performance hydrophobic...

Noncoding RNAs in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Potential Diagnosis and Prognosis Biomarkers
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently the most common chronic liver disease worldwide in part due to the concomitant obesity pandemic and insulin resistance (IR). It is increasingly becoming evident that NAFLD is a disease affecting numerous extrahepatic vital organs and regulatory pathways. The molecular mechanisms underlying the nonalcoholic steatosis formation are poorly understood, and little information is available on the pathways that are responsible for the progressive hepatocellular...

Short-term effects of outdoor air pollution on acute ischaemic stroke occurrence: a case-crossover study in Tianjin, China
ObjectiveAmbient air pollution is associated with ischaemic stroke incidence. However, most of the previous studies used stroke-related hospital admission rather than stroke onset itself. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between ambient air pollutant exposures and acute ischaemic stroke based on the timing of symptom onset.MethodsA time-stratified, case-crossover analysis was performed among 520 patients who had ischaemic stroke admitted to the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University...
