Safety of tenofovir during pregnancy: early growth outcomes and hematologic side effects in HIV-exposed uninfected infants
Abstract Intrauterine exposure to zidovudine-based combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) can cause severe anemia within the first weeks of life. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)–based regimens may have less hematologic side effects but may affect growth parameters. This study aimed to assess the safety of TDF for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) in HIV-exposed uninfected infants regarding early growth outcomes and hematologic side effects. Our retrospective...

The perspectives of parents, general practitioners, and community pharmacists about treating an ill child in primary care: a comparative study
Abstract As children are unable to make health-related decisions themselves, parents play a central role in consultations with healthcare providers. Parents’ perspectives are therefore the focus of this study. Our first aim was to determine parents’ expectations of a healthcare visit with a general practitioner and a community pharmacist. The second aim was to determine the general practitioners’ and community pharmacists’ perspectives about consultations with children. An observational...

Sociodemographic factors associated with health literacy in a large sample of mothers of newborn children: cross-sectional findings from the KUNO-Kids birth cohort study
Abstract Health literacy is an important public health goal and of particular relevance when people are starting a family. Health literacy is thought to be crucial for the management of the manifold demands relating to child health which are imposed on parents. The aim of this study was to investigate health literacy in a large sample of mothers of newborn children in Germany. Sociodemographic factors and health literacy (as assessed by the HLS-EU health care scale) were analyzed...

Trends in age- and sex-adjusted body mass index and the prevalence of malnutrition in children with cancer over 42 months after diagnosis: a single-center cohort study
Abstract The adequate nutritional status of pediatric cancer patients is particularly important to enable them to cope with the demands of the disease and its treatment and to maintain normal growth. Malnutrition and obesity have both been associated with reduced survival and increased drug toxicity. We investigated trends in the age- and sex-adjusted body mass index (ISO-BMI) and the prevalence of malnutrition in a Finnish cohort of 139 consecutive children receiving chemotherapy...

Pigtail catheters versus traditional chest drains for pneumothorax treatment in two NICUs
Abstract Pneumothorax in newborns can be life-threatening. The traditional treatment of pneumothorax is chest drain placement. Recently, modified pigtail catheter has been proposed as a less traumatic approach despite limited experience in infants. To compare the effectiveness and safety of pigtail catheters versus traditional straight chest drains in term and preterm infants with pneumothorax, in two tertiary neonatal units: Policlinico Hospital in Bari, IT and John Radcliffe...

Lung ultrasound in preterm infants with respiratory distress: experience in a neonatal intensive care unit
Abstract Lung ultrasound (LUS) has been described as a useful tool in early prognosis of several respiratory diseases of the newborn, especially preterm infant newborns (PTNB) with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), but still, it is not a standard of care in many neonatal units. We have conducted a descriptive, prospective study in a tertiary neonatal unit during 1 year. PTNB less than 35 weeks with respiratory distress at birth on non-invasive ventilation were recruited. A LUS...

Specificity of Procedure volume and its Association With Postoperative Mortality in Digestive Cancer Surgery: A Nationwide Study of 225,752 Patients
Objectives: We aimed to examine whether the improved outcome of a digestive cancer procedure in high-volume hospitals is specific or correlates with that of other digestive cancer procedures, and determine if the discriminant cut-off of hospital volume may influence postoperative mortality (POM) regardless of the procedure. Background: Performing complex surgeries in tertiary centers is associated with improved outcome. However, the association between POM and hospital volume of nonspecific...

Total Versus Near-total Thyroidectomy in Graves Disease: Results of the Randomized Controlled Multicenter TONIG-trial
Background: Previous data suggest that the incidence of hypoparathyroidism after surgery for Graves disease (GD) is lower after subtotal thyroidectomy compared to total thyroidectomy (TT). The present study evaluated the incidence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism after near-total (NTT) versus TT in GD. Methods/Design: In a multicenter prospective randomized controlled clinical trial, patients with GD were randomized intraoperatively to NTT or TT. Primary endpoint was the incidence of transient...

A health and safety model for occupational exposure to radiofrequency fields and static magnetic fields from 1.5 and 3 T MRI scanners
Abstract The exposure of MRI staff to SMFs and RF fields in the MRI units happen as a result of their induced movement in the MRI room during patients’ examination. Exposure to SMFs among health care workers has been associated with vertigo, nausea, increased heart rate, hypothermia and metallic taste in the mouth. The only known adverse effects associated with RF fields’ exposure include induced tissue heating, and the scientific arguments regarding non-thermal effects are inconclusive....

New molecular biomarkers in precise diagnosis and therapy of Type 2 diabetes
Abstract Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a complex metabolic disease associated with disturbances in metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, and largely under the influence of very complex interactions with genetic and environment factors. High prevalence and increasing number of patients with T2D in the world, represent constant challenge for better elucidation of pathogenic mechanisms which contribute to disease development. This paper summarizes a new molecular biomarker...

Ender 3 BLTouch fails in assorted ways
My recently installed bltouch probe regularly fails to perform ABL properly. There seem to be 3-4 failure modes: probe manages some points but fails partway through, with a "probing failed" message on the LCD screen, rendering it necessary to power-cycle the printer probe deploys on some point, then stows itself immediately, and treats that point as being a centimeter or two about where it actually is. probe completes all 9 points, then heats the nozzle in the back corner and never moves....

Maintenance of Compression With a Positional Screw Versus Compression Generated With a Lag Screw
Objective: To determine whether a position screw will maintain the interfragmentary compression force obtained by a reduction clamp across an anatomically reduced cortical bone fracture and determine whether this compressive force is equivalent to that generated by a lag screw (LS). Methods: Oblique fractures were created in 6 composite cortical bone models. Interfragmentary compression was measured using force sensors within the fracture after reduction with a clamp. A position screw was...
