Abstract
PURPOSE:
The Daily QATM3 phantom from Sun Nuclear Corporation has been a popular daily quality assurance (QA) tool for many institutions. PTW has recently introduced the QUICKCHECKwebline phantom as an alternative. The goal of this study was to compare these two commercially available devices for daily quality assurance measurements of a linear accelerator and assess the overall performance of the new phantom.
METHODS:
Two daily QA phantoms (PTW QUICKCHECKwebline and Sun Nuclear Corporation Daily QATM3) were measured over a 4-month period using a 20x20cm² field size and delivering 150 MU. Photon energies of 6 and 18 MV were measured on a daily basis, and electron energies of 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 MeV were measured weekly on a 23EX Varian Linear Accelerator. Consistency of the dose output, beam flatness, in-plane and cross-plane symmetry, and beam quality were evaluated.
RESULTS:
The QUICKCHECKwebline and Daily QATM3 performed with maximum percent differences from baseline of -0.97% and 1.12% for output, 1.36% and 0.82% for flatness, 0.86% and -1.36% for in-plane symmetry, -1.41% and 1.00% for cross-plane symmetry, and -0.91% and 1.29% for beam quality respectively over all energies.
CONCLUSION:
Consistent and accurate measurements over a 4-month period, a user-friendly interface, and wireless features prove the QUICKCHECKwebline would be a suitable phantom for daily quality assurance use.

Abstract
PURPOSE:
Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are frequently used drugs in oncology practice. Although oral administration is an advantage, long-term use increases potential drug-drug interaction risk. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of potential TKI-drug interaction (PTDI) in patients who used TKIs and increase awareness of this subject.
METHODS:
We retrospectively evaluated the data of 310 patients collected from four different oncology centers, where TKIs were administered for solid organ cancer, between January 2007 and December 2017. The potential interaction between TKI and any other prescribed drug was determined using ''Lexicomp® Drug Interactions, App Version 1.1'' software.
RESULTS:
Overall, 310 patients were included; among those, 301 (97.1%) were using another drug with TKI and 147 (47.4%) experienced PTDI at least once. The median number of additional drugs was 4 (range 1-12). We detected 250 PTDIs, of which 30.8% were major interactions. The most frequently interacting TKI was imatinib (29.6%), and the additional drug group was antibiotics (21.2%). We observed that PTDIs caused the following effects: TKI concentration was increased or decreased owing to 14.4% or 22.8% PTDIs, respectively, and electrocardiographic QT prolongation occurred in 22% of all PTDIs. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that use of higher number of additional drugs (odds ratio/OR=1.63), pre-existing lung cancer (OR=8.82), and use of pazopanib (OR=9.22) were potential risk factors.
CONCLUSION:
The rate of PTDI is quite high in patients using TKIs. Effort must be made to increase awareness of this subject. Increasing awareness aids in lowering toxicity rates and providing efficient antitumor therapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE:
To assess the effect of cancer patients' attachment patterns on their satisfaction of medical care.
METHODS:
This was a cross-sectional design study performed in an outpatient palliative care clinic. The sample consisted of 100 cancer patients. Participants completed the Greek versions of patients' satisfaction, and attachment orientation to close others (Family, Close Friends, Medical Care Providers).
RESULTS:
"Information/interaction with health-care professionals" subscale positively correlated with "disease duration". "Availability of care" subscale was negatively correlated with "discomfort with closeness", "anxiety", and "avoidance". "Information/interaction with health-care professionals" positively correlated with "metastasis", "chemotherapy", and "hormonotherapy", while "availability of care" had positive correlations with "education", "chemotherapy", and "hormonotherapy". Multiple regression model showed that "discomfort with closeness" was associated with "information/interaction with health-care professionals". Similarly, "chemotherapy" and "surgery" were positively associated with "information/interaction with health-care professionals". Disease duration was associated with increased satisfaction with "information/interaction with health-care professionals". Predictors of "availability of care" were "discomfort with closeness", "education", and "avoidance".
CONCLUSIONS:
"Chemotherapy", "surgery" and "discomfort with closeness" predicted low satisfaction with "information/interaction with health-care professionals", while "discomfort with closeness" and "avoidance" predicted low satisfaction with "availability of care" and at the same time a high level of "education" predicted patients' satisfaction with "availability of care".

Abstract
PURPOSE:
To evaluate the inhibitory effect of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in combination with cisplatin on the proliferation of human osteosarcoma cells in vitro.
METHODS:
Three groups of human osteosarcoma U2OS cells were cultured in DMEM medium supplemented with the following drugs: 20 µg/mL 5-FU, 50 µg/mL 5-FU and 50 µg/mL 5-FU in combination with 0.5 mg/L cisplatin. After culture at 24, 48 and 72 h, the inhibition of proliferation rate of U2OS cells was calculated by CCK-8 cell kit. Cell invasiveness was assessed by Transwell assay. Flow cytometry was used for monitoring the cell apoptosis.
RESULTS:
5-FU inhibited the growth of osteosarcoma cells, and the results of different concentrations of 5-FU were significantly different. The growth of U2OS cells decreased significantly within 24-72 h, and the concentration of 5-FU increased with time. The inhibition of the shift was more obvious, and the combined drug inhibition was significantly higher than the 20μg/ml 5-FU Group, 0.5mg/L Cisplatin Group and 50μg/ml 5-FU Group. After 72 h, the mean inhibitory rates of 20 μg/mL 5-FU, 50 μg/mL 5-FU, 50 μg/ml 5-FU in combination with 0.5 mg/L cisplatin, and 0.5 mg/L cisplatin were 12.54±1.26%, 22.17±0.59%, 32.54±1.25%, 20.84±0.83% respectively, and the difference was significant (p<0.05). Results of cell invasion assay showed that after culturing for 48 h, the mean number of cells penetrating the membrane was 22.84±5.27 in the culture group of 0.5 mg/L cisplatin, 30.57±5.68 in the culture group of 20 µg/mL 5-FU, 18.68±4.88 in the culture group of 50 µg/mL 5-FU, and 9.84±3.64 in the culture group of 50 µg/mL 5-FU in combination with 0.5 mg/L cisplatin, respectively, and 72.00±7.52 in the control group, showing statistical differences in each group (p<0.05). The apoptosis of the control group was significantly lower than that of the other groups (p<0.05). Apoptosis rate of the 20μg/mL 5-FU group was significantly lower than that of the 0.5mg/L cisplatin group, the 50μg/mL 5-FU group and the 50 μg/ml 5-FU group in combination with 0.5mg/L cisplatin (p<0.05). There was no difference in apoptosis between 0.5mg/L cisplatin and 50μg/mL 5-FU group (p>0.05).
CONCLUSION:
5-FU in combination with cisplatin exerts an inhibitory effect on the proliferation and invasion of human osteosarcoma cells in vitro, and can promote cell apoptosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE:
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the common types of cancer that originate from the nasopharyngeal region. Recurrence and early metastasis represent major problems associated with NPC mortality. These are mainly caused by various molecular changes that take place during the conversion of normal stem cells into treatment-resistant stem cells. The aim of our study was to investigate the proliferative behavior of cancer stem cells in different stages of NPC and to identify the functional roles of SPLUNC1 and MLL3 associated with cancer stem cells.
METHODS:
We successfully developed a NPC mouse model using C666-1 cells. Immunohistochemistry and Western blotting were used to analyze the expression of SOX2, SPLUNC1 and MLL3.
RESULTS:
Null BALB/c mice developed initial and aggressive stages of NPC in 3 and 10 weeks, respectively. Histological results showed that the proliferative ability of cells increased as the tumor progressed to the next level. The SOX2 protein showed a peculiar pattern of upregulation in aggressive NPC when compared with control tissues and initial NPC. Remarkably, our study found that SPLUNC1 and MLL3 expression showed upregulation in initial NPC, which indicates their role in the tumor resistance mechanism even if their expression was downregulated in aggressive NPC.
CONCLUSIONS:
Our results conclude that SPLUNC1 and MLL3 expression control the resistance mechanism of cancer stem cells in initial NPC, but their downregulation in aggressive stages contributes to developing resistance in nasopharyngeal cancer stem cells.

Abstract
PURPOSE:
Esculetin is an important bioactive coumarin with amazing potential to suppress the growth of cancer cells. The present study was designed to investigate the anticancer effects of esculetin against the human leukemia HL-60 cells.
METHODS:
CCK-8 assay was used to assess cell viability. DAPI and annexin V/propidium iodide (PI) staining was performed to investigate the induction of apoptosis. Autophagy was detected by electron microscopic analysis. Flow cytometry was used for cell cycle analysis and Western blotting was used to estimate protein expression.
RESULTS:
Esculetin suppressed the proliferation of HL-60 cells dose-dependently. The IC50 of esculetin against HL-60 cells was observed to be 20 µM. The anticancer effects of esculetin against HL-60 cells occurred though different mechanisms. Esculetin induced apoptosis and autophagy in leukemia cells, which were accompanied by alteration in the expression of apoptosis as well as autophagy-related proteins. Esculetin also triggered G0/G1 cell cycle arrest in HL-60 cells, which was also accompanied by suppression of Cyclin D1 and D3. Esculetin could also block the Raf/MEK/ERK signalling pathway in leukemia cells in a concentration-dependent manner.
CONCLUSION:
These results indicate that esculetin inhibits the growth of leukemia cells and hence may prove beneficial for treating leukemia.

Abstract
PURPOSE:
To explore the prognostic value of SOX11 in patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
METHODS:
The clinical data and paraffin-embedded tissue of 75 primary MCL in Shanxi Tumor Hospital were collected, and the MCL international prognostic index (MIPI) was rechecked in all cases according to simplified (sMIPI) formula. The expression of SOX11 mRNA was detected by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and the relationship of survival with SOX11 mRNA and MIPI in MCL patients was evaluated.
RESULTS:
Median survival was 44 months in cases with low-risk, 31 months in cases with intermediate-risk and 30 months in cases with high-risk. There was statistically significant difference between low-risk and high-risk group (p=0.0033), while there was no statistical difference between low-risk group and intermediate-risk group (p=0.1067) and the intermediate-risk group and high-risk group (p=0.6149). Furthermore, cases were divided into group SOX11mRNA<M (median of SOX11 mRNA level) and group SOX11mRNA≥M in each MIPI group according to SOX11 mRNA expression, and the results of 3 groups all showed that median survival was shorter in group SOX11mRNA<M than that in SOX11mRNA≥M (p<0.05). Univariate analysis showed poorer survival was associated with blastoid transformation, ECOG≥2, p53 positive, bone marrow involvement, high-risk group and SOX11mRNA<M. Multivariate analysis showed blastoid transformation, high-risk group and SOX11mRNA<M were poor prognostic factors.
CONCLUSIONS:
SOX11 mRNA level has certain prognostic value and SOX11 mRNA≥M was related to good prognosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE:
Esophageal cancer mortality trends vary substantially across the world. This study assessed the trend of esophageal cancer mortality in Serbia.
METHODS:
A population-based study analyzing esophageal cancer mortality in Serbia in the period 1991-2015 was carried out based on official data. The annual percentage of change (APC), with the 95% confidence interval (CI), was computed using the joinpoint regression analysis. The age, period and birth cohort effects on the mortality from esophageal cancer were examined using the age-period-cohort analysis.
RESULTS:
In Serbia, esophageal cancer mortality trend significantly increased from 1991 to 2015 in men (APC=+0.9%, 95%CI=0.3 to 1.4), but nonsignificantly increased in women (APC=+0.4%, 95%CI=-0.6 to 1.4). The age-specific mortality rates were increasing with age, but this trend has only been significant in men in the 50-59 years age group (APC = +1.5%, 95%CI= 0.8 to 2.3). The age-period-cohort analysis suggested statistically non-significant period and cohort effects, and local drifts for both genders (p>0.05 for all).
CONCLUSIONS:
The trend of esophageal cancer mortality should be elucidated in future analytical epidemiological studies in Serbia.

Abstract
PURPOSE:
To evaluate patients, diagnosed with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, according to patient specific parameters including hemoglobin level, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), body mass index (BMI) and cigarette smoking and to identify if any of these parameters matters in terms of recurrence prediction.
METHODS:
231 patients who have undergone transurethral resection of the bladder (TURB) between January 2015 and January 2018 and diagnosed with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) were included. Patient demographic characteristics including age, sex, BMI and cigarette smoking were assessed. Hemoglobin, creatinine and eGFR values were recorded. Follow-up was performed according to the European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines' recommendations. Recurrence and progression during follow-up were recorded.
RESULTS:
231 patients were included in the study. Median patient BMI, Hb levels, and eGFR values were 26.51 kg/m2 (IQR 5.48), 14,2 g/dL (IQR 2.50), and 83.25 ml/min/1.73m2 (IQR 27.83), respectively. Among all patients, 105 (45%) were ex-smokers and 78 (33%) were current smokers, 41 had anemia (17.7%), 37 (16%) patients were obese; 104 (45%) had mildly impaired renal function and 34 (14.7%) had impaired renal function. During follow-up, 67 (29%) patients had disease recurrence and 21 (9.1%) had disease progression (9.1%). Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed significant relationship between recurrence and obesity, impaired renal function and cigarette smoking.
CONCLUSIONS:
Recurrence is a commonly encountered unfortunate consequence of NMIBC, and obesity, renal failure, history of smoking and anemia seem to increase the rate of recurrence among bladder cancer patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE:
The aim of this study was to investigate the potential association and combined prognostic significance of the frequency of primary cilia (PC), programmed cell death protein-1 receptor (PD1) and CD8+ tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) in patients with clear cell renal cancer (ccRCC).
METHODS:
The frequency of PC, PD1 expression and the frequency of intratumoral CD8+ TIL were evaluated in 104 ccRCC patients.
RESULTS:
The median frequency of PC was 0.003. The expression of PD1+ cells were <5% in 52 patients, 5-25% in 34 patients and 26-50% in 13 patients and >50% in 5 patients. Intratumoral CD8+ TIL were evaluable in all patients: negative in 1 patient, <25% in 63, 26-50% in 29 and >50% in 11 patients. Overall survival (OS) according to the frequency of PC was significantly shorter in patients with higher frequency (≥0.002) than in patients with lower frequency (<0.002) (p<0.001). Median OS was significantly shorter in patients with higher (25%) CD8+ TIL and higher (>25%) PD1+ expression than in patients with lower (<25%) expression (4.6 vs. 97. years, p=0.006 and 2.9 vs. 8.9 years, p=0.006, respectively).
CONCLUSIONS:
