Abstract Rationale Sleep difficulties are one of the problems associated with adolescent binge drinking. However, the mechanisms underlying adolescent alcohol-associated sleep disturbances and potential targets for therapy remain under investigated. Orexin receptor antagonists may have therapeutic value in the treatment of insomnia, yet the use of this class of drugs in the treatment of sleep disturbances following adolescent alcohol exposure...

Abstract Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are considerable biopolymers that have gained an increasing biotechnological interest in different applications, although their industrial production presents several limitations. Filamentous bacterial cells could represent a possible strategy to increase PHA yield, since more abundant PHA inclusions can be stored in elongated than in rod-shaped cells. At first, we determined the optimal batch culture conditions to induce filamentation in Pseudomonas...
Abstract Quorum-quenching (QQ) enzymes can block the quorum-sensing (QS) system and prevent the expression of QS-controlled pathogenic factors in bacteria. However, the low expression levels of QQ proteins in the original host bacteria have affected their widespread application. In this study, we heterologously expressed momL, encoding a QQ enzyme with high activity, in Lysobacter enzymogenes. A “yellow-to-white” selection marker and the high-constitutive-expression promoter PgroEL...

After analysing 102 human heart specimens we conclude that the typical ventricular septal defect (VSD) in congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (ccTGA) is an outlet VSD and is frequently misdiagnosed as an inlet VSD. The orientation of the septal band is similar in ccTGA and normal heart, and different in ccTGA and TGA. Even if a transposition is present, ccTGA should not be considered a sub‐group of TGA and the term ‘double discordance’ may be more appropriate. Abstract Congenitally...

Oncolytic virus therapy is emerging as important means in cancer treatment. In a previous study, we constructed a dual cancer-specific antitumor recombinant adenovirus, designating it Ad-apoptin-hTERTp-E1a (Ad-VT). This study aimed to investigate the anticancer potential of recombinant adenovirus Ad-apoptin-hTERTp-E1a (Ad-VT) in liver cancer. Crystal Violet staining and CCK-8 assays were used to analyse the inhibitory effect of recombinant adenovirus on human hepatoma cell line QGY-7703 and SMMC-7721....

This protocol describes a step-by-step workflow for immunofluorescent costaining of IBA1 and TMEM119, in addition to analysis of microglial density, distribution, and morphology, as well as peripheral myeloid cell infiltration in mouse brain tissue.
Here, a protocol is presented to produce and rear CRISPR/Cas9 genome knockout electric fish. Outlined in detail are the required molecular biology, breeding, and husbandry requirements for both a gymnotiform and a mormyrid, and injection techniques to produce Cas9-induced indel F0 larvae.
Here, we describe a single cell micro-aspiration method for the separation of infected amoebae. In order to separate viral subpopulations in Vermamoeba vermiformis infected by Faustoviruses and unknown giant viruses, we developed the protocol detailed below and demonstrated its ability to separate two low-abundance novel giant viruses.

Abstract Anxiety disorders are the most frequent mental disorders and are more prevalent in the female population. Up to date, an involvement of guanylate cyclase A and B in anxiety‐like behavior has been suggested. In this study, we showed an expression of guanylate cyclase C (GC‐C) in the amygdala which is regulated by feeding. Therefore, we further investigated sex differences of GC‐C effects on anxiety levels with special attention to female estrous cycle and feeding. The effects of estrous...

NainiSummaryDrug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a challenging and constantly changing field. The pathologist plays a key role in interpreting liver biopsies by classifying the pattern of injury, grading the severity of injury, and evaluating for other possible causes. Reports of iatrogenic liver injury are reviewed here with a focus on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) [i.e., intestinal failure-associated...

Loss‐of‐function mutations in CEP112 were identified from two infertile patients with acephalic spermatozoa. The nonsense mutation c.496C>T produces a truncated CEP112 protein and the bi‐allelic mutations c.2074C>T and c.2104C>T may affect the coiled‐coil domain of CEP112. The expression of CEP112 protein level was reduced significantly in the patients’ spermatozoa. Abstract Acephalic spermatozoa, characterized by the headless sperm in the ejaculate, is a rare type of teratozoospermia....

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to examine the level of stigma and identify the correlates of stigma among lung cancer patients in China. Methods In total, 283 lung cancer patients were recruited from a tertiary cancer center in China by the convenience sampling method and completed a demographic, disease‐related information and situational characteristics questionnaire and self‐reported measures assessing stigma, state self‐esteem and coping self‐efficacy. Results The mean stigma...
Abstract Sleep and circadian rhythms are closely related to physical and psychosocial well‐being. However, sleep and circadian rhythm disruptions are often overlooked in children with cancer, as they are frequently considered temporary side effects of therapy that resolve when treatment ends. Yet, evidence from adult oncology suggests a bidirectional relationship wherein cancer and its treatment disrupt sleep and circadian rhythms, which are associated with negative health outcomes such as poor...
Abstract Objective Morbidity from head and neck cancers (HNCs) and their treatment is significant, given their proximity to anatomical sites impacting facial appearance and function. Assessing the needs of HNC patients throughout their cancer journey is critical to informing quality care and improving quality of life. We aimed to identify available unmet needs measures in the HNC setting and appraise their content and psychometric properties. Methods We conducted a systematic search of...
Abstract Objective This study aimed to evaluate FCR among lymphoma patients who completed treatment and its impact on survival and quality of life (QOL). Methods In this prospective cohort study, 467 lymphoma patients were included who completed treatment with curative intent between Feb 2012 and March 2017. FCR was measured using a question from the Korean version of the QOL in Cancer Survivors Questionnaire. QOL and general health and functioning were measured using the EORTC QLQ‐C30....
Abstract Objective Depression and anxiety lead to reduced treatment adherence, poorer quality of life, and increased care costs amongst cancer patients. Mindfulness‐Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an effective treatment, but dropout reduces potential benefits. Smart‐message reminders can prevent dropout and improve effectiveness. However, smart‐messaging is untested for MBCT in cancer. This study evaluates smart‐messaging to reduce dropout and improve effectiveness in MBCT for cancer patients...
