Podcast: Explaining Depression To Happy People
Are you so happy that you can’t understand depression? Not us! While Gabe and Jackie can’t relate to that level of positivity, there are lots of people in the world who simply can’t fathom what depression feels like. Despite their best efforts, naturally happy people can have a hard time understanding depression and in Episode 2, we discuss how to explain depression to happy people, including both of our spouses who are, to be honest, annoyingly peppy. We give tips on how to approach the topic and...

Application of an open position splint integrated with a reference frame and registration markers for mandibular navigation surgery
Navigation surgery plays an important role in modern craniomaxillofacial surgery, but it is difficult to apply navigation surgery to the mandible, due to its mobility. At present, headbands or headpins are widely used for fixation of the reference frame, and three strategies are generally used for the application of navigation surgery to the mandible. This article reports the application of a novel open position splint integrated with a reference frame and registration markers for mandibular navigation...

Feasibility of Treating Adults with Ewing or Ewing-Like Sarcoma with Interval-Compressed Vincristine, Doxorubicin, and Cyclophosphamide Alternating with Ifosfamide and Etoposide.
CONCLUSION: For adults with Ewing and Ewing-like sarcoma, administration of interval-compressed chemotherapy is feasible, without significant dose reductions required. Our results are comparable to prior studies involving a primarily pediatric population. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: For Ewing sarcoma, interval-compressed vincristine, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide alternating with ifosfamide and etoposide administered every 2 weeks rather than every 3 weeks has been shown to improve event-free...

Withholding the Introduction of Anti-Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor: Impact on Outcomes in RAS Wild-Type Metastatic Colorectal Tumors: A Multicenter AGEO Study (the WAIT or ACT Study).
CONCLUSION: Delayed introduction of anti-EGFR had no deleterious effect on OS, PFS, and ORR, compared with doublet chemotherapy with anti-VEGF. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: For RAS/RAF wild-type metastatic colorectal cancer, patients may receive 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy plus either bevacizumab or an anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). In daily practice, the time to obtain the RAS status might be long enough to consider two options: to start the chemotherapy with bevacizumab,...

Surgery Versus Surveillance for Well-Differentiated, Nonfunctional Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors: An 11-Year Analysis of the National Cancer Database.
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that active surveillance is potentially a safe approach for NF-panNETs <1 cm. Larger tumors likely need active intervention. Intermediate-grade tumors did not result in worse survival outcome compared with low-grade tumors. Future studies might consider prospective randomized clinical trials to validate our findings. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The present study seeks to address the discrepancy in treatment recommendations in the management of nonfunctional...

Tumor Mutational Burden as a Predictive Biomarker for Response to Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors: A Review of Current Evidence.
Authors: Klempner SJ, Fabrizio D, Bane S, Reinhart M, Peoples T, Ali SM, Sokol ES, Frampton G, Schrock AB, Anhorn R, Reddy P Abstract Treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICPIs) extends survival in a proportion of patients across multiple cancers. Tumor mutational burden (TMB)-the number of somatic mutations per DNA megabase (Mb)-has emerged as a proxy for neoantigen burden that is an independent biomarker associated with ICPI outcomes. Based on findings from recent studies, TMB...

Independent effects on cellular and humoral immune responses underlie genotype-by-genotype interactions between Drosophila and parasitoids
by Alexandre B. Leitão, Xueni Bian, Jonathan P. Day, Simone Pitton, Eşref Demir, Francis M. Jiggins It is common to find abundant genetic variation in host resistance and parasite infectivity within populations, with the outcome of infection frequently depending on genotype-specific interactions. Underlying these effects are complex immune defenses that are under the control of both host and parasite genes. We have found extensive variation in Drosophila melanogaster’s immune response against...
