Atrazine exposure in gestation and breastfeeding affects Calomys laucha sperm cells
Abstract The present study evaluated the effects of low doses of atrazine administered during gestation and breastfeeding on sperm characteristics of the wild rodent Calomys laucha. Adult females were divided into groups of 10 and administered different doses of atrazine through gavage, during gestational or breastfeeding period. At 3 months of age, the F1 adult male progeny of these females was evaluated. We observed a drastic reduction in the total and progressive motility of...

A Veteran-Centric Model of Care: Crossing the Cultural Divide
Although most U.S. physicians train at Veterans Health Administration hospitals, few have served in the military. The author, a veteran and physician, discusses how failure to appreciate the differences between civilian and military cultures can result in veterans' and physicians' perspectives being misaligned when managing a veteran's health.

Universal Access to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Antidepressants Is Necessary for All Patients With Major Depressive Disorder
Evidence suggests that cognitive behavioral therapy and second-generation antidepressants are equally effective in treating major depressive disorder. Ross and colleagues examine the cost-effectiveness of these therapies. The editorialist discusses why these findings support the need to assure the availability of both therapeutic options.

The Majority Subsidy
Academic medical institutions have recognized the need to improve diversity among faculty members, trainees, and students. Persons from underrepresented minority (URM) groups are often asked to serve on search committees to help with these efforts. This article suggests that this places undue burden on URM persons while unintentionally lessening the responsibility among those in the majority for helping to improve diversity in academic medical institutions.

The Cost-Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Versus Second-Generation Antidepressants for Initial Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in the United States A Decision Analytic Model
Background:Most guidelines for major depressive disorder recommend initial treatment with either a second-generation antidepressant (SGA) or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Although most trials suggest that these treatments have similar efficacy, their health economic implications are uncertain. Objective:To quantify the cost-effectiveness of CBT versus SGA for initial treatment of depression.Design:Decision analytic model.Data Sources:Relative effectiveness data from a meta-analysis of randomized...

Fragmentation studies of neutral per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances by atmospheric pressure ionization-multiple-stage mass spectrometry
Abstract The establishment of fragmentation pathways has a great interest in the identification of new or unknown related compounds present in complex samples. On that way, tentative fragmentation pathways for the ions generated by atmospheric pressure ionization of neutral per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) have been proposed in this work. Electrospray (ESI), atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and photoionization (APPI) were evaluated using mobile phases...

Sticky boundary to retain a thick layer of eutectic mixture of local anesthetics cream at surgical site for effective anesthesia
Topical anesthetic creams are widely used to provide local anesthesia in dermatologic surgery. To achieve the desired effect, a certain degree of penetration is required. This effect can be achieved by occlusion with a transparent dressing. However, the use of dressings for occlusion can lead to spillage of the cream, which can result in a poor anesthetic effect.1 The recommended dose of the drug is 1.5-2 g per 10 cm2 area of skin, which might not be retained under the occlusive dressing.2 Furthermore,...

Efficacy and safety of anti-inflammatory agents for the treatment of major depressive disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
ObjectivesTo systematically review the efficacy and safety of anti-inflammatory agents for patients with major depressive disorders.MethodsWe searched the literature to identify potentially relevant randomised controlled trials (RCTs) up to 1 January 2019. The primary outcome was efficacy, measured by mean changes in depression score from baseline to endpoint. Secondary outcomes included response and remission rates and quality of life (QoL). Safety was evaluated by incidence of classified adverse...

Controllable Microswimmers Move Around Individual Cells in 3D
Manipulating individual cells and microscopic particles may be extremely valuable for testing new therapies, targeting tumors, and for studying the underlying causes of disease, but it is very difficult to directly manipulate individual cells within an environment shared with other cells. A collaboration of researchers from University of California San Diego, University of Pennsylvania, and Harbin Institute of Technology in China has developed pretty amazing microscopic devices that can move...

Bruin Biometrics Is on a Mission to End Pressure Ulcers: Interview with CEO Martin Burns
Earlier this year, Medgadget reported on the FDA’s clearance of the SEM Scanner, a device created by Los Angeles-based Bruin Biometrics (BBI). The SEM Scanner is a wireless, handheld device that detects changes in sub-epidermal moisture as an indicator of risk for developing a pressure ulcer. Moisture can indicate the presence of localized edema and tissue fluid-related inflammation well before visual and tactile tests that represent the diagnostic standard of care today. To learn more about the...

Coaxial Electrospinning Creates Novel Contraceptive, Other Medical Devices
Electrospinning is a manufacturing technique that has recently been getting a lot of attention in medicine because it allows researchers to produce novel materials and devices. Essentially, a polymer is melted and squeezed through a nozzle and an electric field is used to pull and spin it into a mesh of very fine fiber. The material has a huge surface area, given its volume, and it can be combined with drugs and other devices, and used as a part of therapies in all sorts of ways. There’s also...

Potential Significance of Facet Joint Fusion or Posteromedial Fusion Observed on CT Imaging Following Attempted Posterolateral or Posterior Interbody Fusion
Radiologic evidence of successful lumbar fusion has traditionally been based on bridging bone spanning the intertransverse processes (posterolateral fusion or PLF) or disc space (interbody fusion, or IBF). Often, postoperative computed tomography (CT) of unsuccessful PLF and IBF demonstrates bridging bone across the facet joints or connecting the medial transverse process to the ipsilateral superior articular facet of the caudal vertebra. The significance of this finding in terms of implant stability...

Fatigue changes neck muscle control and deteriorates postural stability during arm movement perturbations in patients with chronic neck pain
Multisensory afferent inputs to the cervical spine affect the generation of neck muscle control. Chronic neck pain (CNP) and muscle fatigue are factors that disturb somatosensory function. Whether they affect postural control under self-initiated perturbation in daily activities is still unclear.
